EMPIRE MARYS GIFT. ROPE OF PEARLS AND GIRL GUIDES HOME.

It was announced on February 23rd, that the contributions to the wedding gitt from the Marys of the Empire to Princess Mary amount to considerably over £9,000 and that her Royal Highness has decided to accept for herself a small rope of paris, and to devote the remainder of the rim to the founding of a training home in con- nexion with the Girl Guides.

When the scheme was 'started very modest ideas were entertained by the com- mittee, of which the Hon. Mrs. Geoffrey Hope Morley is chairmum, sa to the amount which would be received, both because only an intimation that donations would be received was made it deing felt that anything in the nature or striat organiza tion would be out of place in these dificul time and that the small sum of 10. wad set sa the strict limit. Early in the monti however, it became apparent that te steady stream of small me from 6. u wards would amount to a goodly total.

The idea was from the beginning tật the gift should be a personal one, pid various jewels of rare beauty wore pn- sidered. When, however, the news me to the Princess's ears her Boral Highless resolutely refused to allow the mone to be spent in this way, preferring the it should be used by her to benet otra. At the first the Princess would only u sider accepting what in such a conneba can be considered only as a mere trist. The earnest representations of the t mittee that such a course would se considerable disappointment to by donors all over the Empire, hower, ind poed the Princesa yesterday to modify her decision, and to acceptar herself a small but very beautiful ropif pearls, which was presented privately February 23rd.

This represents far less than half the the rest of which will be given by her R Highness to found a training home, to b her name, in connexion with the Girl Guid for want of which that excellent body! mack hampered. Her Royal Highness been influenced in her decision by the that the Guides are at work all over Empire, and that the "benefits they conf are open to the whole of its girlhood.

WHEN ROYALTY MAKES LOVE.

HOW KINGS AND QUEENS CONDUCT THEIR COURTSHIP.

oding of The popolar idea that the Royalty is hedged about with restrictions is, so far as England is concerted, about as true as that the King goes to bol wearing

golden crown.

As a matter of fact our Royalty conducts Wide with little maza restriction than any other private gentle-folk.

Princess Louise got engaged we have it from Queen Victoria's diaries-during Highland ride with her lover King Edward fret saw his future bride without her knowing it, in a foreign Cathedral, and fell in love with the beautiful young princess.

King George proposed at Sueen Lolge, and ereu of Queen Victoria's love-making we have some account.

The story, as recorded by the Queen barself, goes that after rejecting her other suitors, she herself proposed to the Prince. Consort, her life times lover.

At a great ball at Windsor, the young Queen publicly took a spring of flowers from her bouquet and fasted them to the Prince, who, taking a penknife, cut a slit

in bis uniform over his heart, and securing the flower, bowed low,

The engagement was announced,

The love making on the lawns--one special corner is still pointed out-in the private gardens of Windsor Castle was to lead to a married happiness remarkable in a couple of any rank.

St. George's Chapel, at Windsor, is,"as it were the Cathedral of the Court, while in London the Chapel Royal of St. James's has been the scene of many Royal marriages. Here the weddings of Queen Victoria and King Geroge took place, whi's King Edward and the Princess: Louise were married in St. George's, Windsor..

"Princess Pat," of courda, was married at.. Westminster, but in St. Margaret's, not the Abbey. It is 640 years since the Abley itself housed the wedding of a child of the Sovereign, and curiously enough, that occa sion, too, was a roarriage to "object." | Joanna, the nineteen year old daughter of Elvard L. marrying the Earl of Gloucester. In quite the modern style, a temporary hall of wood was erected for the feasting of the guests, and the fashion reporters of the chronicles have left on record that this bride wore a gold head-dress, studded with rubies and emeralds. What a curious coit. dence that the bride of to-day's marriage, our Princess, has emeralds for her choseu store!
