A DEFENCE.

A defence of the split infinitive was one feature of the presidential address de- livered by Sir Sydney Russell-Wells. to the Modern Language Association at Cam Dridge.

Sir Sydney supposed that the majority me the split infinitive in daily conversa tion, yet most people feared to employ it in writing because certain pundits had pronounced the fat thou shalt not aplit the infinitive," and they feared ridicule. Yet no logical reason has ever been ad- vance for banding the split infinitive. It was used by Wyel. Ee and has been employed by celebrated writers in every century since. Sir Thomas. Brown, Pepys, Bentley, Daloe, Dr. Johnson, Southey, Coleridge, Lamb, Wordsworth. Do Quin- cey, Charles-Reade, Ruskin, Browning, to cite only a few, all split their infinitives when they thought ocension required." Browning has been contemptuously accus ed of splitting his infinitives as if they were fire-wood. Probably he did so for the same reason that firewood is split: in order to make it more useful for the needs of humanity...

"Yot to standardise and to stabilise the speech of their own day has been the constant, though futile aim of the parists of all ages.
