CHINESE CURES.
ANCIENT SYSTEM STILL BEING FOLLOWED.
Visitors to the office of the imperial physician of China in the city of Peking are the recipients of many startling surprises. In a recent paper. Dr. E. V. Cowdry describes one of the shrines where a large bras statue is kept.

A suitable gratuity to one of the attendant coolies," says Dr. Cowdry, *** results in the speedy removal of all the clothing, the altar and sacrificial vessels so that the acupuncturo holes may be closely examined. The holca indicate the proper places for the in ertion of needles in various diseases, the idea buing that al! ailments are due to an improper as sociation between the various circulating, lile principles which consequently require. liberation.

Miniature statues of this kind are used in China for instruction in different Why's. We read that one method is to cover the body with a layer of parafin and paper, to fill with water and to let the novices try their skill at locating the Boles with needles. If they are success. fal, the water gushing forth spines the liberation of male and female principles from the living body But very little. if any, instraction is now given in the office of imperial physicians. Images are worshipped not used; good food is offer~ ed and cheap incense burned lavishfy.
Dr. Cowdry nim describes the official textbook of the office of the Imperial physician. This, he says,
is called the Gold Mirror occupies a
placa of honour on the central table. It was written under the supervision of the Em- puror K'aug Hai (1801-1709 A.D.), from originals attributed first to the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.
A.D.), and still earlor to the ythical Yellow Em
Emperor (9603 B.C.), who is considered to be the father of
of Chinese medicine. Perhaps no other medical book has held its ·popu- larity through so many centuries Even to-day, about 200.000;000 Chinese are con- tent to be treated in accordance with ita dictates, so that, in a very real sense, it
for them an arbiter of life and death.
It consisted of eight large volumes in Chinese cases covered with blue cloth. Each volume contains from six to twelve books bound in imperial yellow. It teaches thas the air passes through the larynx to the beart and other palpable absurdities. Turning over the pages, we come upon many interesting drawings indicating different disease conditions, such as the grain pustule sickness (rysipelas) in child and in adults. There are also charas and mystic diagrams in profu gion."

It is quite obvious to everybody that over-stimulation is quite as harmful as under-stimulation." But it is not recognised as clearly as it ought to be that the most important thing for users of stimulants to consider is the quality of the stimulant used. There are three things to con- sider in selecting your brand of Whisky:

1. The article that is distilled (Barley). The method of distillation (pot still). 3. The length of time it has remained in bond to eliminate objectionable properties. In each of these particulars HAIG & HAIG claim that they have reached the highest standard yet" attained in the Whisky world.

Whatever one may, think of Southern Ireland and its Provisional Premier, Mr. Michael Collins, at least there will be high approval with practically every-]} one of the rebuke he administered to the Countess Markievicz, who in the treaty debate in the Dail, had dragged the name of Princess Mary into the discussion. This Counter-politician, who has a seat. in the Dail as representative of a division of Dublin and who was a member of De Valera's Cabinet, referred in her speech opposing ratification of the Irish Agree ment to the "Kings and Queens and this Lascelles," and added: "It is suggested that Princess Mary should break off her engagement and marry Michael, Collins."
Mr. Collins, who was not in the House at the time, made a personal statement later, as soon as he had returned. said:-
He
"The deputy, for the division of Dublin, speaking to-day when I was not present, made a reference to my name and to the name of a lady belonging to a foreign nation which I cannot let pass without a protest. Some time in our his. tory as a nation a girl went through Ireland and was not icaulted by the people o Ireland. I do not come from the class that the deputy for the Dublin division comes from. I come from the plain people of Ireland. The lady whose name was mentioned is, I understand, betrothed to same man. I know nothing of her in any way whatever; but the statement made this morning may cause pain to the lady: betrothed to me. I will not allow with out challenge any deputy in an assembly cf my nation to insult any lady either of this nation or any other nation."
Mr. Collin's reference to "the girl whol went through Ireland" was to the maiden about" whom. Moore wrote the poem. "Rich and rare were the gems she wore." She undertook a journey alone from one end of Ireland to the other in the days of Brien, and so faithfully were the laws of that monarch obeyed that she was Dever molested.
