WORKMEN. --

Walls of a Roman building belonging| possiby to the third or fourth century have been uncovered by Post Office work- men laying cables in Gracechurch street,

When the trench was cut, "writes & Daily Chronicle representative, a wall, about 2 din. thick, with painted plaster, was found 13ft down.

Another wall gift. thick was found at right anglez to it, with features indicat- ing that it once formed part of an inner chamber of a Roman public building. The plaster was square panelled with simple painted ornamentation. Portions of small tessellated brick were also found, Measurements and photos have been taken, and the workmen were filling in the trench.

A TELZORY CONFIRMED.

Mr. Lambert, F.S.A., of the Guildhall Museum, who has been watching the work, said that the proximity of the re- mains to those found and preserved in i the basement of a hosiery establishment close by lend colour to the suggestion that the present discoveries are associated with the original Forum of Roman Lon- don.

confirms the theory of anti- quarismo Brid, that old Lendon strrots did not conform to the thorough- fares of the original Roman city.

"Even though many discoverice bear. ing upon Roman London have been made in recent times he said, "it is impos sible to reconstruct any detailed plan. There is not one single complete plan of any Roman building yet recorded.

TWELVE FEET THICK.

ין

"Discoveries made in 1881" showed that the Forum buildings were on the site of the present Leadenhall Market. The Uracechurch Street portions of public Homan buildings set to have extended originally in the direction of Leadenhall. There was a Roman building stretching from Gracecharch Street right across the centre of the Leadenhall Märket, and its wall was 12ft. thick..

Approximately the older of the two walle just found is not earlier than the third century, so that the town was even then old when they were built. for coins of Claudius dated about A. D. 50 have been found in the City."

TI LES FOR CANADIANS,

QUEBEC MOVEMENT FOR THEIK RESTORATION.

A movement has begun in Quebre for the restoration of knighthoods and the like honours for Canadians (writes The Tres correspondent). It is believed that; the proposal wil have the general sup- port of Quebre Librala,

the abolitioni aa 'actual majority in the Canadian Parliament, largely because the denial of such hon ours to Canadians tends towards the sentimental sparation of Canada from the other Dominions and affrets its close relation to the Crown, which is among the chief binding fores of the Empire.

A Special Committee of the Cane- dian Hous of Commons was appointed in April. 1910, to consider the question of titles in Canada, and if unanimously recommended that hereditary titles in Canada should eense upon the death' of present holders, aud, by a large majority. that no further knighthood

ninor orders, and titles should be bestow. rd. These recommendations were

subsc. quently ratified, by Parliament.

Ani amendment to refer back, the Committee's report, with instructions to strike out all the paragraubs except those" with r ference to hereditary titles was defeated by 90 voter to 13.

A LITTLE AND GOOD"

is the slogan or motto of the house of HAIG & HAIG. It suggests moderation as well as quality. It does not mean that when you call for a little and good" that you will get a less quantity. It means that one glass of a little and good" is an adequate and pleasing stimulant.
