GIRL SLAVES. CHOSEN FOR SONS OF THE HOUSE

Lady Susan Townley, whose husband was formerly Councillor at the British Legation in Peking, contributes a long article to the Weekly Dispatch reminis cent of the days she spent in China. The following is extracted from the article:- Such and little story came to my knowledge the other day. From my usual post on the verandah I saw

funeral procession wending its slow way through the fields to a little burial-place close by.

I asked the bay (Chinese mansor- vant) who was being buried, and he told me it was a little girl of eleven years of [age who had been stolen by a neighbour And secretly taken to Peking to be sold as a slave.

"But people were too pradent to buy a girl who evidently was not his and of whom he could give no good account; ao, after days of wandering about with her and finding at last that he could not get her off his hands, not daring either to return with her to the villag whence be had stolen her, he murdered her by throwing her down a well

"Her body was not found till days after, when the man had coolly returned to live in his cabin Lear her father's. The prime, however, was brought home to him, and I hope he suffered for it!

"Selling girls as slaves is not at all an uncommon thing here. They are bought as servants and domestic drudge. In many cases they are well treated and,

At the village bend the same order was, maintained, Allied King still lying last. Rounding the corner Mr. Hill gave Allied King his head 'and coming into the straight the pony had run into second place. From this stage it was a neek and neck race with Empire Dahlia. Both ponies came well away Mr. G. C. Moxon's Colombus, 159 lbs. (Mr. Thompson) from the other and passed the distance post abreast. The ponies responded Mrs. Montagu Ede's Flotsam, 185 lbs. (Capt. Spinks) gallantry to the call of their riders and Mr. Nemazee's Arsenian, 155 lbs. ran level to the last 100 yards when

(Mr. Harriman) Allied King gained and held a slight nd- o vantage and passed the judges box with half a length to spare amidst the cheers 0} of the crowd. Honesty Dahlia, which had led the race to the home stretch, came in third, three lengths hehind,
