PARIS FASHION NOTES.

(FROM OUR SPECIAL, CORRESPONDENT, ISABEL MAMBAT.]

PARIS, December 19th. The chief characteristic about the fashion parade this work at the Salon d'Autonne was the quantity of yellow, orange and, brown shades worn, as well as that becoming blend of brick red and yellow known as cog de roche. Black is cortainly not in the good books of de signers, and women who persist in wear- ing it will do so in spite of the unanimous "that its days decree of the Ras Kings

of glory are a wing of the past. In their latest models. only show it in conjunction with wing or in the form of black for fur, jet or braid as trimming. Yellow and brown sbades predominate over all others, both in the matter of material and in that of decoration. Maite shades decorated with designs em broidered in a deeper tone of yellow, and white decorated with motifs morked in yellow and brown shades were the colour sahemes chosen for many of the most effective creations shown. Among these, wers several quaint tea-gowns made with harem" trouser skirt showing the feet through two openings at the side; this and the bodice tormed one single" straight piece of material, which was drawn into the waist by means of a tight girdle, and finished at the neck with an oval slit and no sleeves at all. All of the tea-gowns shown had added to them a long train made from a straight piece of material cased on to the shoulders at the back in a straight line and float ing out freely behind, sometimes having no finish at the end; sometimes gathered Croated on these into a huge tassel.

lines and carried out in the somewhat subdued shades I have just mentioned, these tea-gowns were most effective and bad daridely Algerian look about them. As well as white being used with black, red is also brought into play, and it is rare now to see a black dress that is not acting as a foil for a startling dash of this colour. It fashes out from the lin- ing of capes and panels, from the waist. line, where it outs across in some vivid balt or girdle; it delights the eye from a becoming angle on a hat or threatre head-dress; or it twinkles at you from handbag, pocket-handkerchief and even shoes, many of the latter being now made of patent leather piped with red and with Louis XV. red heels. In place of the downright vermilion shade of red, such modifications as rose du Barry, vieux crimson, salmon and so on are pre- ferred.. Black evening dresses are still worn a great deal, but always they show some note of colour if the wearer is a woman who fellows the trend of fashion. When this note is not actually decisive in the form of ribbon of material, it is subtle in the form of a girdle of truit or silk hand-made Bowers, wax flowers, collophane fruit, or metal cabochons. Invariably, the dress will be of the chemise type, with no sleeves and only an oval for the neck, so that the colour note, whether added in its startling or subtle form, will be also the only distinctive note about the dress.

Nicole Groult was the principal ex- hibitor of the, day and her creations O worthy of note, as she represents a modern school which aims above all at being ultra-modern and ultr-original. The result is, that one can always count on seeing in this house what one sees a10- where else. In the collection shown at the Salon d'Automne there was a noted pre ference shown by this designer for brown, yellow and. rod in their varied shades. Black and white, was also used with mach effect and, like all designers just now,, Nicole Groult proved her faith in the be comingness of jet as a tranming by asing it lavishly, but always with every evid ence of thought and good taste on the majority of her modes. A distinctive feature of this designer's models-like those of Jeanne Lanvin-is the number in each acason's collection of what the French call genre frocks and what we would probably call "period" fracks Side by side with creations that are the! last note in the modern cult of the in- ment, Nicole Groult always shows a cer tain number which have been inspired by toilettes worn in the Middle Ages, in the reigns of the Louis," during the Empire period, or in the Victorian days of Louis Philippe; these, she re-creates and pro- ents in their modernized form, and in- variably the result is charming.

The most fascinating example of this type of model was an evening gown copied from one of Fragonard's pictures in the Louvre. It was in black venet.) made with a very long, full skirt, bunched up on the hips and caught with a knot! of blue ribbon; the bodice was tight fitting and was finished with thres hows of blue ribbon down the front end a ruffle of white net round the neck, which "was cut wide and low so as to show the shoulder tips; a suspicion of a train voin- pleted this charming Louis XVI-resur rection.

Another updel of this kind was carried out in black taffetas, the full skirt being trimmed with horizontal bands of black velvet finished on each side of the front width of the skirt by bow; "The tight- fitting bodice showed three knota of the velvet in front, hands and knots finishing
