A. HOUSE-BOY'S LAPSE..

REV. MR. UPSDELL SAVES BOY FROM |

{

BEING SENT TO GAÖL

A Chinese house-boy employed, by the Ber. G. E. & Upsdell, Queen's College, was charged, before Mr. Lindsell, at the Magistracy, yesterday, with stealing two pounds of batter" from compradore's shop on the previous day.

The problem of the hour, in regard to the strike, is how to bring the opposing parties together so that an attempt can be made to arrive at a settlement. This is the question that is puzzling the man in the street and it evidently presents diffenities, too, for those in power and Authority. Probably no one expects the Inspector Grant said that the boy when seamen to go back to work pending ordering provisions at the compradore's settlement; most people would be con attempted to steal about two pounds of tent, for the time being, to see arbitrag batter.

When questioned by the shop tion in progress, though it would be for Jakie the boy dropped the basket con better, of course, if the wheels of com-taining the stolen butter and attempted merca ware allowed to revolve meanwhile. The regrettable fact is that so many days have gone by without bringing the settle ment any nearer and with commerce being held up into the bargain.

It is nearly a week since the ship owners replied to the Seamen's Union that they were ready to meet delegates to arrange the preliminaries of arbitra tion, but still no reply has been received

from the men's leaders at Canton Pro- minent officials of the Secretarias - for

to ran away «

The Rev. Mr. Upsdell said that the boy had been in his employ for over a year, and, there had no complaints against him. The Magistrate: Can you suggest any reason for his doing such a stupid thing

Mr. Upadell: I believe he has been gambling during the Chinese New Year holiday. The boy started gambling two months ago and I have spoken to him

about.. it.
