THE UNITED SERVICES. THE CLUB.

A return two-days' match between the Nervices and the Club was commenced on Saturday, both sides turning out strong teams, though on paper the Ser vices appeared to have a distinct advant age.

When the two teams met during Armistice week, last year, the Club were early defeated by an innings and 38 Funs. In the match this week-end, how- ever, the personnel of both sides had been changed to the extent of more than 50 per cent in both teams...

When the game opened on Saturday the pitch was in a pasty condition, hut the Warn sunshine in the afternoon made difference and the pitch improved.

It was, however, on the slow side.

The Services went in first and the bat bing was opened by Captain Olliver and Captain Havelock Davies When the latter had scored. 15 he was caught by Bayer, who made a magnificent one-handed catch: After 45 minutes' play the second wicket fell, but not before the score and been advanced to $0. Lieut.-Com Jotham, who was batting vigorously was joined by Sub-Liout. Stephenson and by tiffin time they had carried the scors to

80 without further loss.

By 2.30 p.m. L. Franks and Steven- son had been dismissed. A fine partner- ship then ensued between Jotham and Major Edwards. They carried the score from 90 to 174 when the latter was clean bowled by Hamilton. Six minutes later Jotham, who looked set for a century, was beaten at 78 by a tricky ball from Sager. The remaining players were easily dismissed and the side was ou for the total of 101.

Hamilton bowled well and took four wickets for 27 runs, Sayer also had four wickets to his credit but as a cost of 78

rans.

The Club opened with Mitchell and Sayer, and both batted Cautiously.

Davies was in fine form and his bowling Was difficult to score off. Both batsmen „went, out for moderate totals as did Braga and things looked black for the Clab Pearce's efort improved matters and he was instrumental in carrying the store to 01, for 7 wickets when stumpe were drawn.

MONDAY'S PLAY.

When play was resumed on Monday Pearce, with the "assisstance of Lammert, Reed and Hamilton carried the total to | 168, an advance of 67 runs on Saturdays core, leaving the Club 33 runs in arrears on the first innings Pearce's 78 not out was the result of very cautions batting.. His drives to the boundary were not so numerous as usual. He took no chances with Davies and adopted wearing-down. tactics rather than those of vigorous hit- ting.

Capt. Davies bowled throughout the and his 31 overs included. 18. ing were but few. maidens and the runs scored off his bowl-]

The first three wickets of the United Services 2nd innings produced 51, Jotham being responsible for a further 43 runs. The remainings six batsmen were easily dismissed for the modest total of 41 ruzis and of this number Capt. Spinks was responsible for 20. At 151 for nine wickets the United Services declared.

Shortly after tiffin the rain commenced to drizzle and the Club's second innings was opened in a shower; when the third wicket fell it was raining heavily and it was decided to abandon the match. At this stage the Club' required 124 to win with seven wickets to fall. Had the match been cpatinued an exciting finish would probably have been witnessed. Scpres:-
