FUTURE

KEEPING THE EMPIRE BRITISH.

"British Columbia-The Awakening of the Pacific" was the subject of a paper read before the Dominions did Colonies Section of the Royal Society of Arts on December 8th by Mr. F. C. Wade, the Agent General for British Columbia The Duke of Devonshire occupied the chair.

The cutting of the Panama Canal, Mr. Wade pointed out, had reduced the dis- tance by sea from Liverpool to Victoria, British Columbia, from 14,888 miles to 8.512. The difference between the all-sen route by the Canal and the sea and land. route by the Atlantic and Mannen was only 2,680 miles. What this reduction meant to oommerce and civilization in, and around the Pacific could scarcely be conjectured.
