LORD GREY'S ROMANCE, HIS RECENT ENGAGEMENT TO" LADY GLENCONNER.
There is something almost dramatically appropriate in the engagement of Lord Grey of Fallodon to Lady Olenconner, writes Mr. T. PO'Connor in the Sunday Times. If you had known George Wynd han, you would not require anybody to tell you the first moment you saw Lady Glencoaner that she was his sistor. The resemblance between the handsome and gilled brother and the handsome and gifted sister is striking enough to make you think that they were twin brother and sister.
WYNDHAM'S SISTE
Lady Gleneonner has something of the same colouring as her brother-dark in complexion, blue-eyed with fine features, and a full and harmonious figure. She, too, has the literary genius of her bro made a great man of letters if he had ther. George Wyndham would have not allowed himself to be distracted by politics, in which vortex he went down ultimately in black tragedy, and, like har f brother, has a certain turn to mysticism.
Lord Grey was the husband-for many years of one of the fascinating and out- standing figures of her time-beautiful, her gifted husband. Up to the day of her witty very outspoken, and devoted to death-she was killed by a fall from a car he and she lived like boy and girl lovers, going together everywhere, in- cluding the little zinc-roofed cabin be side the river where the husband fiabod during his week-ends, and they both lived on sardines and other tinned food and attended to all their household duties. I do not know that if the world were searched there could have been found a fitter companion for Lord Grey than this very brilliant, beautiful, and gentle woman whont he is now going to marry.
pon.
Meantime, this alliance may have its political consequences. The re-entry of Lord Grey into political life was not a sudden or a purely personal a
ineous impulse. subject of conversations extending over I believe it was the months for Lord Grey; as usual-for he has never had much personal ambition- was inclined to hold back.
Everybody of the eighties and the 'nineties remerabers his famous saying: I'm told the ball is at my feet; but I don't care to kick it' It required there- fore,, some pressure to induce him once has taken the plunge; and it may be more to plunge into the vortex. But he now nasamod that when the time comes for new combination of the Liberal forces this mast meat his having a very prominent part in the reconstructed part in the reconstructed party, and per has also in the Ministry which must come when the new Coalition succeeds the present,
LADY CLENCOYNER.
Lady Glenconner, who is 50, and was widowed, after 25 years of happy married life, just twelve months ago, belongs. to a particslarly brilliant family. She is a sister of a former Irish Secretary. Mr. George Wyndham, the friend of Mr. Alfred Lyttelton, who married one of the rarest spirits and most gifted women of this generation a sister of Mrs. Asquith
