The China Mail sa Fanking nailed from Hongkong to San Francisco vid wayports with a record arst-class passen- gar list of 158 passengers and 223 steerage and a fairly good cargo.

A Washington cable to Japan states that the officials of the United States Shipping Board may take over, the army transports on the Facific as an experi ment. Mr. Albert D. Lasker is request- ing Mr. Weeks, Secretary of War, to par mit the board to operate the transports in connection with the weekly service which he expects to inaugurate soon from the Pacific Coast to the Far East and The vessels would be the Philippines. operated by a private company, believed to be the Pacific M1 and the United States Shipping Board. Mr. Lasker be- lieves the service will need Government patronage until it builds up its own busi- As Mr. Weeks is considering the plan and may turn over the transports as an economy experiment.

Mr. Frederick F. Perris, who for the past year has been acting as adviser to the Imperial Japanese Marine Corpora tion, left Japan for England, recently Mr. Perris was received by Prince Higs ashi Fushimi. honorary president of the "corporation, before his departure and His Highness presented Mr. Perris an autographed portrait and a souvenir. At a luncheon held at the Imperial Club in Tokyo Mr. Yonejiro Ito, president of the Nippon Yusen Knisha, said that during the year of Mr. Perris's stay in Japan the tonnage of the vessels classed with Japanese Corporation had increased to about 120,000 tons grosa, and that this was very largely the result of Mr. Per ris's efforts. They were deeply indebted to him for his work.
