PRESIDENT OF COMPANY ON SHIPPING CONDITIONS. The regular general meeting of share- holders of the Nippon Yusen Esisha was held at Tokyo, on November 2g9th to re- ceive the report and accounts for the six months from April 1st to Septembur Söch: Mr. Ito, President of the Company, presided.
A dividend of twenty per cent. per annum was declared.
Addressing the shareholders. Mr. Ito made the following remarks in regard to the Company's business during the term under review and the future outlook:-
The results of the Company's operations daring the term under review were rather unsatisfactory. The net profit 'was only F.3,330,000, which was Y,2,200,000 less than that for the preceding term and Y.8,000,000 less than for the first half of last year. This discouraging state of affairs was practically due to inactivity in the world's economic affairs, resulting: in a decline in cargo and a fall in freight

Whe ther this only temporary, or in the fore. runner of recovery, time alone can tell. It may, however; be supposed that the freight situation will not become worse, provided no further unfavourable factors present themselves. The annals of the world's shipping show that there were three periods of shipping prosperity be fore the European war namely in 1868. 1900 and 1012. However, re-action follow ed the boom each time, and on an average it took four years and a half to recover from the depression After the Sino-ceeding direct to Marseilles and London. Japanese and the Russo-Japanese Watts, the day before sailing. The contents which were both contined to the Far East. Japan's shipping recovered after the lapse of four or five years of inactivity. A re vival of the present shipping dullness which has affected the whole world will take many years. While the German re paration question has been settled, the coal strike in England and the threatened railroad strike in the United States caused general "anrest Should economic conditions in Central Europe, excluding Germany, and in Russia improve, thie will contribute much to stabilizing world economics and.. reviving the export and import trade.
The tonnage of steamers built at the end of September was, according to Lloyds, 3,750,000 tons, excluding work suspended or delayed. The figures show a decline of over fifty per cent, asa com- pared with the figures of a year ago.
Wo hope the Washington Conference will recognize the extension of equal opportunity and the open door principle in commercial affairs, and the freedom of commerce and shipping. Should a cur- tailment of armaments be effected, the money thus saved may be utilized for productive. enterprises. In case the Japanese surplus population finda outlets in Siberia, Manchuria, Mongolia, South America and elsewhere, this will mean Shanghai activity and extension of shipping. No pessimistic views feed therefore be enter- tained as to the future of Japan hip- ping-Japan Gazette.
