criticise the financial reasons which have led to their disposal. I certainly am not Among those who hold that cavalry is dead arm or that the place of flesh and blood in man and horse can ever ba wholly taken by petrol and machiner The time has not yet come when we can afford to dispense with cavalry. When the lessons of the Great War are properly. understood they will be found to teach no one thing more emphatically than this that cavalry is still an essential a. Do not think I disparage or under- value the new weapons. Tanks, nero-
planes, and heavy guns are all alike in- dispensable; they have not yet served to. eliminate the horse, which, in the hands of a trained cavalryman, is a part of the man himself. The development of mechanical transport indeed open up new opportunities of usefulness for cavalry by giving cavalry the necessary weight to overcome local and extemporised re- sistance, and by enabling cavalry to con- tinue its effort over greater distances and for longer periods. In the late war the limited force of cavalry at our disposal in France found on more than one critical occasion work that only cavalry could do. At least one occasion can be quoted where the absence of cavalry proved of decisive importance

TELEPHONE 1030,
Here in a city so long connected with cavalry unit feel I am entitled to my word for the arm in which I started soldiering. You will not think that forget your own infantry regi, ment, the Buffs nor yet the splendid work of the other Kentish battalions. Let me give you the last message that was received from the commander of the 7th Royal West Kente, for it is typical of the spirit displayed by all the Kentish men in action on that memorable and momentous occasion: "Holding out 12.30 p.m. Boche all round within fifty yards except rear. Can only see forty yards, Bo it is difficult to kill the blighters." they held out at least until some bours (Cheers and laughter.) We know that later, and that by so doing they helped to save the right of the "British lino, That was the manner in which the men of Kent fought on that day, and bere in Canterbury I am proud to thank them for what they did. To my thanks to you for all that you have caid and done to-day I add also my thanks to the officers and men of the Buffs and other. Kentiah battalions who served under me, and I assure them that so far as I can ensure it their service shall never be forgotten or their claims overlooked. (Cheers.)
Dean Wace, on behalf of the citizens, welcome Ear Haig as a freeman of Canterbury, and said the city and its cathedral had, bo was thankful to recall been closely associated with distinguish od soldiers from the days of the Black Prince to the present time.
