23rd he was playing with his two younger brothers in Third Street. One was 6 years and the other, Taing Ah Hing, was 3 years old. Shortly after 11 o'clock, be noticed that Ah Hing was missing. Ho knew defendant slightly. He lived in the cock loft of his father's house. Shortly after 10 o'clock the same morning_the defondant had tried to take, Ah Hing away but witness stopped him. A little later he saw the man again leading Ah the boy in his arms and carried him back Hing away by the hand.. Witness took to where they were playing. Shortly afterwards witness saw him again with the child. He objected saying You leave my brother alone." but the defen- dant said. "What are you afraid of? I am only going to take your brother for a walk and for some tea I am not going to sell him.' Witness did not further, and seeing that he was a follow lodgerbe allowed him to take the child away. Witness waited for the child to be brought back, but as he did not turn up by 11.45 he went home arging and told his mother. A search was started but the child could not be found. Later he saw defendant arrested outside the market entrance. In the morning defen dant was wearing a white tattered coat; in the evening he was wearing a blue) cont and had shoes and stockings on.. He had no shoes and stockings in the morning.
The boy's evidence as to the search and subsequent arrest was corroborated by the child's mother and a district watch- man.
Inspector Appleton called evidence fo disprove a statement made by defendant that he was working on the day in ques tion with a bricklayer.
