Mr. Fresson, the well known former military aviator, and Mr. D. W. Leach, the popular Interport member of the Cricket Club, have been receiving the congratulations of their friends on, a remarkable escape from death which they experienced on Armistice Day. Fresson has dong a considerable amount of dying over and around Shanghai in Major. W. R. McBain's 1915 Armstrong Whitworth zeroplane and it will be re membered that he thrilled the crowd in the British Consulate grounds on Em pire Day when he executed some daring manœuvres close over the troops assem- bled for the parade there.

It was with the intention of repeating the performance, witnessing from the air the naval parade on Race Course and other happenings, that Mr. Fresson weat up between 10 and 11 on the morning of Armistice Day, taking Mr. Leach with him as a passenger. They bad scarcely got into flight when the engine showed signs of trouble and it was noticed that the radiator was leaking. Finally, the engine stopped and the pilot started to plape down to the ground.

The machine was down to 200 feet when it encountered an air pocket one of the flying man's

greatest dangers-side slipped and crashed. The controls jam med so that Mr. Fresson could not move them with his hands though he pushed with his foet at the same time with all his strength.

Mr. Leach, with great presence of mind, seeing that a crash was inevitable, climb ed to the fuselage and bung on, thereby breaking the force of his own fall. The pilot was strapped in and would un- doubtedly have been killed but for the fortunate fact that the machine tilted and fell sideways, so, though both men were considerably shaken, the only real
