them have given the best years of their lives in helping to build up the trade union movement for collective bargain- ing, and they view with considerable apprehension the position of that move- ment under the guidance of some-of-its present leaders, These leaders are, con- sciously or unconsciously, propagating several divergent industrial and political theories which are causing the utmost confusion and unrest in the industrial world, and this at a time when the whole of our energies ought to be devoted to getting the wheels of industry, revolving: again and the unemployed found useful. work. The extraordinary part about these conflicting theories is that not only does each one destroy all the others, but all find a place under the official Labour party's umbrella.

For instance, one section is demanding the nationalisation, or the socialisation, of all the means of production, distri bution, and exchange, notwithstanding the fact that if there is one thing the vast majority of the workers of this country do not want, and will not have,

is kry more Güvernment interference with their industrial affairs.. Another section, which has invested over |£30,000,000 · of its savings in the co- operative movement, say that whatever else is nationalised the co-operative movement will not be. Another section is demanding the entire abolition of the wage system and capitalism. A fourth section holds that we should allow pri- vate enterprise the fullest opportunity to provide useful employment for all by developing our old industries and initiat ing new ones, subject to the establish- ment of Trade Parliaments or Indus- trial Courts, or Whitley Councils, that would guarantee to workers all they are: justly entitled to for their labour.

Now it is obvious that these conflict- ing industrial systems will not harmonisc any more than oil and water, but they cuable Messra, Clynes, Henderson. Thomas, and other leaders of the official Labour party, to be constantly tinging the changes upon them all in their endea vours to catch the passing political breezes that are to waft them to the front seats of the Treasury benches in the House of Commons-some day. "It may be argued that the leaders of the Labour party are as conscious of the in- consistencies of their political propa ganda as we are. If they are what be comes of their honesty of purpose? They cannot have it both ways. The workers are being told that their interests and those of their employers are diametrically opposed to each other. Mr. Henderson encourages this by talking about "or- ganised labour destroying capitalist domination," Such propaganda is both: dishonest and untrue, as the slightest investigation shows.

THE ALTERNATIVES.

Now the only alternative to Capital- ism"js"Communism." If we rule out, Communism as impossible for many years to come we have to fall back upon the wage system. With this system our em ployers may be State officials under

& nationalised industries, or the co-opera- tive movement under co-operative pro- duction, or private employers under private enterprise. Whoever they are they must first provide the necessary: capital to build and "equip our factories and works, provide the raw materials for the production of goods, and suf Icient liquid capital to pay the workers' wages during the "period of production.

As our exports are paid for by our imports, it follows that markets must be found in this country for the goods we do not export and for those which we import.
