It may not be generally known that certain marriages of affinity involve problems of physiological and medical importance bearing on heredity and the possible transmission of disease from ons generation to another. There are atud ents of this matter, who are firmly con vinced that, for example, the marriage of a man with his deceased brother's wife differs essentially in its physiological consequences from that with a deceased wife's sister: they hold that this differ- ence is especially remarkable where a woman has borne children to her first husband and then in her widowhood mar ries his brother. It is a contention that. undoubtedly, is supported in theory it not a practice by many facts well known to medical men; if it can be proved true there is no doubt that public opinion a to the desirability of marringes of this -kind may be radically influenced.

The questions that arise relate to the effect of marital relatioris on the physio- logy of the wife, and to the question whether her maternal function is por- anently influenced by the fact that}} she has borar children! So far most of the investigators interested in this prob lem have concerned themselves with the latter point. Certainly it is not dil- Acult to see how a great change in the! woman such as they emphasise may come about, for during the long period be fore the child is born there is probably

persistent exchange of material be tween the blood and tissues of the mother and those of the developing embryo. Even if these exchanges are slow in ex- tent and small in quantity it is clear that a great deal can be effected within the space of nine months, and we know that in the ease of certain vital prin- ciples-including the hormones and endo erines such as thyroid-s very minute quantity is sufficient to produce great effects on the whole system.

If a woman' who has borne children has, indeed, her reproductive function permanently influenced in this way it is quite clear that she cannot present a second husband with children that are en- tirnly the product of his own influences; her second family will in some way of another bear the stamp of her first has band. To put the matter briefly, if this contention is correct the white widow of a negro whose children she has brought int the world will and that the child- ren she hears to a white man may have definite negroid characteristics:

As regards marriages of affinity the problem is one of wide interest, for although it does not follow that the in- tuence of the first husband is always such as to make it objectionable" for his brother to marry his widow, it is clear that there must be many ecensions, in which through diseass kuch a marriage may be underable from its possible con- sequences to the next generation. Where there is a definite family taint or malady on the paternal side it would appear that the chances of its being transmitted to the children mast, according to the theory in question, be doubled where the father has married. his brother's widow, she already having borne children to her first husband-Daily Telegraph.
