These latter include the Mark, Royal Ark Mariners, Knights Templars, Ancient and Accepted Rita, Royal Order of Scotland, Allied Masonic Degrees, Boyal, Select, and Super-Excellent Masters, Order of Rome and Constantine, Order of Secret Moni- tor, and Societas Rosicrucians. Member. ship of the Craft is an essential to mem- bership in any of the others, and it is in this degree that the advance has been most emphasized.

Ladres and membership had been in- ereasing steadily for some years before the war. In December, 1905, there were under the jurisdiction of the United Grand Lodge of England, 591 London lodgen, 1,485 provincial lodges, and 531 Colonial and foreign lodges. By the end of 1913 these numbers had increased "to 711 for London, 1,711 for the provinces, and 656 Colonial and foreign. But lat December the numbers stood at 833, for London, 4.060 provinsial, and 79 Colonial and foreign-a total of 3,812. as against 2,607, 15 years previously. Since the early part of last December about 190 lodges have been added to the register. The increase has been general all over the world.

A

The support given to the Masonic charities has grown in proportion. sudden jump in expenditure was caused by incrneed demands for admission. Both the boys' and the girls' schools ad- mitted without ballot all eligible candi- dates whose fathers had fallen in the war, and the increased cost of living neces sitated larger annuities to aged or dis treased brethren and widows All these extra expenses were met at once by a spontaneous increase in contributions. The Freemasons' War Hospital remains, now that the war has passed, as the Masonic Nursing Home. Now the York- shire brethren are pleading for a Masonic Convalescent Home, and some Bucking hamshire members"for a Masonic crèche.

The general energies of the United Grand Lodge are centred mainly on the erection of a...muitable”home for the oraft in the centre of London by means of the Masonic Million Memorial Fund. The scheme cannot be fully drafted until the exact sum that will be subscribed can be approximately estimated; but it is ex- pected that definite plans will be submit. ted within the next few months. Building schemes are in progress in Croydon, Kingston, Twickenham, Brighton," and
