MOTIVE OF MURDER AND SUICIDE. FATHER'S LETTERS READ AT INQUEST

The Coroner also read the letter adi dressed to" Barnard," with the remark that it certainly showed the motive for the father's sation: Dear Barnard, I have tried to keep her off the streets, apparently without avail. I have offered every inducement and every sacrifice for the anke of her mother's memory. But lock it is to use. To-day I have had her clothes up to prevent her going away again. Evil company has done it, I am afraid I am sorry indeed to

give you this terrible trouble. It is an ill return for all your kindness, but my affairs, are in perfect order, and joy brother, George. McKenzie, Roslyn, N. B., will attend to at other matters if he is telegraphed for. With all good wishes, yours sincere and shot himself while temporarily inly, RopanICK MCKENZIE, Inte Tank Corps."

An inquiry was held at the West London Coroner's Court, or August 23rd, into the deaths of Lieutenant and Quar bermaster Roderick McKennis, aged 4 and his daughter, Dorothy Bhoda, aged 18, who were found shot in their fat at Glazebury road, West Kensington.-

The jury's verdict was to the effect that Makenzie had murdered his daughter,

Evidence was given that the father, whi

Ivy Jones, describing herself as a maid, we described as a physical wreck wh addicted at times to drink, had tried and fund a friend of the dead girl, said the failed to keep his daughter out of bad girl was afraid of her father when he company, and his failure, as disclosed in was in drink. Evidence of identification of both bodies was given by George Duncan McKenzie, of Bedford-road, Aberdeen, a "wholesale meatsman," brother of the dead man. He said that Roderick McKenzie was demobilized from the Tank Corps in 1910

Was he strict with his daughter about her doings and her conduct Ob, yes The witness further stated that his bro- ther had saved money and was well enough off He had started Dorothy in! business as a milliner, but she gave it up.

Was she apprenticed to someone or was she in charge of the business-She was in charge.

The business was in Lamb's Conduit- street. The witness could not say how long his niece was there, but he thought four or five months.

LETTER TO THE BEUTHER.

The Coroner handed three letters, written in pencil, to the witness, wh stated they were in the handwriting of bis brother. One was to his daughter the second to "Barnard, and the third The last to "George" (the witness). named, read as follows:-"To George,-- Sorry, old man. I have done my best. but Intely Dolly has got beyond me. My affairs are in order, and there are still a few hundreds left. Let my mother down aa lightly as you can. Your loving brather, ROD."

Summing up, the Coroner anid there. could be no question on the evidence that' the Enther fired the shots at his daughter And then killed himself. The motive. was, apparently, that, he was enraged with No doubt the, provocation her habits. was very great, as the girl had admitted her association with three men.

The jury'a verdict was "That Dorothy McKenzie died from ballet wounds in the brain and heart; that the bullets were fired by her father; and that he killed himself while temporarily insane.”

Continuing, the witness said that og Sunday, August 7th, be opened the door for McKenzie, who said he was going to have a Masonic emblem made into a brooch for his daughter, adding, "But that kid has run away. Do you think anyone has her under his or her wing?" He seemed very worried and distressed. On the following Saturday, as the girl Cosmopolitan Dock. Large open som was still away from bome, he (witness) went to Selfridge's, as he thought she might call there for letters. Makenzie had dictated a letter, which a little girl wrote. He met the girl at the latter bureau and he persuaded her to return" home: When they got bome her father and be exclaimed, "How could youl left them together. Last Saturday morn ing when he went down for the lettere he noticed that the newspapers, milk, and bread had not been taken into the McKenzie's Hat and that the sitting-room door was open Later he looked through the back window and saw what he thought was the body of Mr. McKenzie lying on its side in a bedroom. THE PATHER'S FAREWELL Evidence was given by the police of the finding of the bodies. That of the girl was lying at the side of the bed in one of the bedrooms "while that of the man was lying in the fireplace of the same room. He had a bullet wound in the centre of his forehead and a revolver was lying near him..
