THE PRINCE'S TOAST. EMPIRE AND COMMON SENSE CONFIDENCE IN TRADE RECOVERY.
The Prince
of Wales was the guest of the London Chamber of Commerce at ita annual dinner, on July 25th, at the Con naught Rooms. He spoke on the period of transition in the country's "trade and the British qualities which will ensure our recovery. Mr. Stanley" Machin, President of the Chamber, occupied the chair.
The Chairman, in proposing the toast of Our Royal Quest," said that in the Heir to the Throne they had the first Master of Commerce, who, by his pre sence there that night, showed his eam- est desire to help forward at this most difficult time the commerce and industry of the Empire. It had been truly said that in the time of our greatest difficulty the moment had always produced the They had in their Royal guest that man, the greatest asset the Empire pamassed-shilar, soldier, sportsman, statesman, and friend. (Cheers).
MAN.
All responsible men realized that the present situation called for greater labour and greater effort from every member of the community, In this res pect no one set a finer example than the Prince of Wales. Few, if any, careers could be more laborious than his, nor would it be possible to name any servant of the Empire to whom so heavy a debt for work done was due than that they owed to their guest of the evening., Ho had proved himself the most successful ambassador the country had ever had. He had done more to bind together the English-speaking peoples than any other man past or present.
The toast was received with cheers and the singing of "God Bless the Prince of Wales."
THE PRINCE'S SPEECH.
The Prince of Wales, in responding, said:
I want to thank you first very heartily for the kind way you have received this toast, and, I think, il I may say so, your chairman has been very much too kind to me this evening. I should like to say I do valus very much the in- vitation to attend this dinner of the London Chamber of Commerce, and I look upon it as a very great privilego to address so distinguished an assembly. We all of us know that Great Britain depends far more than any other country on its foreign trade. This organization, which represents the business life of tho capital of the Empire, stands for the most complex network of trade interests in the world. Hora in London mota than anywhere else are centred the in- numerable links of British commercial enterprise, and the London Chamber of Commerce has reason to be proud of its unique position and its multifarious activities.
The importance of the work that Obam- bers of Commerce throughout the Empire do in watching over and giving common expression to the interests of the bu nese world I need not emphasize. But
