POSTAGE STAMPS.

LUXEMBURG.

[BY FRED." MELVILLE. }

In the stamp, album one cannot judge the size and importance of a country by the amount of space allotted to ite stamp ismses. Many of the smaller countries have exceeded their greater neighbours in the number and variety of their postal emissions.

The Grand-Duchy of Lumme burg, for instance, with its total area of

of postage stampe, up to the commence- ment of the war, than aither of her great neighbours France, Belgium, and the former German Empire." The rat stamps of this little country were issued in September 18th, 1959, when the

Grand Duchy was still included in the Germanic Confederation. They bore a profile to left of William III, who was also King of Hollnad. A local artist, M. Barth Wahl, was the engraver, and he visited Brussels, with a mechanician, to examine the method of manufacturing the Belgian This visit accounts for the fairly stamps close plagiarism" in the design of the Luxemburg stamps of 1859. which is obvious on comparison with the Belgian issue of 1850: The stampa are of two denominations, 10 centimes black, and I silbergroschen red, and originala are quite scarce, unused or used. They were in use for about nine years, but for the first three years their use was optional. many Luxemburgers leaving it to the addressees to pay the postage. Unused the 10 centimes is quoted at 435.," used 10.; the 1 silbergroschen, which exists in

variety of red shades, is valued from 858 to 788. unused, and 30s used.

In 1963, after these stampa had been superseded by new issue, the copper plates from which they had been printed were defaced and sold, together with the hand-press on which they had been print ed. Over half a century later, in 1908 to be exact, some reprints of these stamps turned up, evidently printed from the old plates, and what was more extra- ordinary still on the correct old paper water-marked "W" the initial of the Grand Duke William. The character of these reprints was detected at in eircles, and the matter aroused ble, excitement in the

Grand Dachy. The Postmaster-General, Mongenest, was able to trace the transac tion of the sale of the defaced plates, but averred that the offcial paper could only have been obtained by theft from the Gov- ernment's depôt. It may be wondered at that the stamps could be printed at all from the defaced plates. but each of these plates bore 200 repetitions of the stamp design. and whits the majority of the 200 on each plate were effectually defaced. a small

The persong responsible for the reprints must have had the plates carefully cleaned up, and retouched. From a careful study of the reprints shortly after their appearance, it was shown" that only thirteen out of the 200 stamps printed from the 10c. plate and only three out of the 200 silber- groseben stamps were sufficiently satis factory to warrant the circulation of the reprints.

1850 a new style of stamp was in- troduced, bearing the arms of the Grand Duchy, and printed from stereotypes. In design and execution they fall very fat After the recess-plate-printed issue, hat with various modifications, and changes of printers, they did service for nearly thirty-seven years, The next design. in troduced in 1862 at the suggestion of M. A. Marc, editor of the Illustration," owes its inspiration to the familiar

type of French stamps. The two figures in this case are emblematic of agriculture and trade,

After the death of William III. the

Luxemburg succession passed to Adolf of Nassau, and a portrait of him by Pro- fessor Michael Engles figures on the first stamps of his reign, issued in 1891, He, in turn, was succeeded by the Grand Duke William Alexander, whose picture as a short-sighted gentleman with pince- nez and heavy moustache, figures on the stamps of 1900-1912.

THE GRAND. DUCHESS CHARLOTTE. This Grand Duke died on February 25th, 1912, at the age of eo. He had six daughter, but no son, and some years before his death a bill had been passed by the Luxemburg Chamber of Deputies vesting the succession in his eldest daugh- ter, Marie Adelaide, who accordingly succeeded in 1012. Her portrait is attrac tively presented on the stamps issued in 1914. This young ruler abdicated after the war (January 0th, 1019) in favour of her sister Charlatte, then 23 years of age. The Grand Duchess Charlotte mar ried Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parmia in November, 1010; and for the first time in many years ʼn male heir was born this year to the ruling House of Luxemburg: Stamps bearing the portrait of the Grand Duchess were in preparation, and one there was rushed through the press and issued in celebration of the joyous event. During the pass few weeks several high value stamps have been issued in the Grand Duchy bearing some hely-cu ed views of the country. are of transverse oblong form, and tho denominations received to date are If. red, 2f. bluc, and if purple. Όπ the is a view of the ruined Château de Vianden, one of many interesting rolica of the feudal age in the Grand Duchy. The 2 depicts factories at Each with a number of smokestacks emitting clouds of smoke, and is no doubt intended to convey the impression that the industries of Luxemburg are not less, architec of celebration than the natural and tural beauties of the country. On the bf stamps is a view of the city of Luxem burg, with the graceful Pont Adolf in the foreground spanning the raving of River Alzette. In design, beauty of engraving, and excellence of printing thers latent stamps of Luxemburg are the Imost attractive of all the numerous issues of the Grand Duchy Daily Telegraph.
