SINGING AS A CUBE-ALL.
PARIS ACADEMY OF SCIENCE HEARS OF ITS WONDERS.
"Sing yourself better" may become a doctor's prescription in the future if the professian adopts the theories" of M. Frossart of the Sorbonne. At the Academy redently his method and its results were described.
As a former, children's doctor, M. Frossart had noticed that singing mot only had a great effect on the general health and development of children by making them breathe deeply, but it seem- ed to have an inexplicable effect in soothing their nerves.
Later, when treating nervous patients, M. Frossart recommended to them that! they sing, and the results, it is declared, have been remarkable.
All sorts of nervous äilments have been treated, such as insomnia, heart, lung and stomach troubles,
M. Fromart declares that singing, which entails deep breathing, has the effect of regularizing the functioning of the sympathetic nerves. His cures for various troubles took several weeks under "phonotherapathic treatment, "sing ing doses being taken at frequent intervals.

COCKTAILS.
THE REAL MISCHIEF.
[BY THE TIMES” MEDICAL CORRESPONDÉNT,]
The letter which was published in The Times recently on the subject of the drinking of cocktails is regarded in medi- cal circles as a warning which is peces- sary. It is the number of the cocktails which certain people drink which is looked on as the chief mischief.
There is no doubt that a a growing num- ber of people do not content themselves with one or two, but drink four or five, or even as many as eight before they, sit down to luncheon or dinner. It

easy enough process, and the habit is acquired rather rapidly. Some men cam- plain that they have these drinks posi tively forced upon them, and that, good meals are spoiled by the necessity of afanding in a bar and imbibing cock-taila before one is
to eat. permitted The habit is
expensive, and in excess certainly detrimental. It is, moreover, à foolish habit, since no one can pretend on its behalf the slightest necessity, or even a very high quality of enjoyment.
The war is usually blamed for having introduced cocktails to the English pub lic; there may be some truth in this, but cocktails were drunk in London in large numbers before the war began. Ons medical man said he regarded them as a of the restlessness and nervous ex- gn of haustion which the war has left behind it. Our fathers drank with dignity, not with discretion, exercising nice dis crimination and appreciating subtleties of flavour and bouquet. We match at strong liquors, highly favo
flavoured and of jaded sensibili

In any case, immoderation in this drink is likely to be punished more severely than immoderation in simpler beverages. Digestion becomes upset, nezvous symptoms make their appearance, and the cocktail drinker, man or woman deteriorates
