The only dispute was the agreement meant that the defendant should be paid £ 108. per day for every day since the circus left the Philippines or whether he should be paid only when actually performing.

The plaintiff gave evidence that he had been engaged in several other circuses before and the arrangement had always been that there should be no lost time. He had understood that the same would apply to this contract,

ATTACKED IN A CHINESE QUARTER,

A visitor to the Colony, Mr. C. C. Qunc,- enbush, staying at the Hongkong Hotel, wh ventured into Chinese districts thas he did not know, reports a most un- plesant experience which, he says, occur red to him at ten o'clock ou Friday night. Mr. Quackenbush states that he was considering whether he should visit Chinese restaurant when he was attacked by two Chinese who, after a struggle, robbal him af 81,000 American gold cur- rency, his passport from Manila, and a first-class steamship ticket from Manila to Seattle.

Mr. Quackenbush managed to find his way back to the centre of Victoria and the Central Police Station. thence to where he made u report at 1a.m. He was not sufficiently acquainted with the net- work of byo-streets in the Chinese districts of Hongkong to identify the place where he was robbed, but the police are doing all they can for him by circulating parti- | enlara to police stations and money changers in the hope that the thieves may be traced.

RUSSIA.

It appears that the Soviet authorities at first refused to allow Mr. Charles R. Crane, the retiring American Minister, to travel through Russia. As a reason,

It is satisfactory to report that con they referred to the "bad treatment fidener is low so far restored in the Han which the American Government gave to knw neighbourhood that shipments are M. Martens." M. Youria was obviously discomfited at the delay of Mr. Crane and apparently disabused Moscow's mied of the idea that Mr. Crate represented an official mission.

After 25 hours delay at Chita, Mr. Crane turned back, but when he was midway to Manchulis telegram arrived, saying that Moscow was willing to allow Lim to proceed through Russia. Mr. Crane then again turned bacic, and is by this time probably at Moscow. He bad, however, previously donated to the hospitals all the goods and conveniences with which he had intended to lighten the rigours of the journey.
