PEERS PANS THE DIVORCE

BILL.

LORD BUCKMASTER "ON THE POSITION IN SCOTLAND.

པ་"་་

Lord Buckmaster, in the House al Lords on April 29th, formally moved the Third Reading of the Matrimonial Causer Bill.

Lord Stuart of Wortley moved the re- jection of the Bill, objecting to the man- ner in which it had been amended by

the addition of desertion alone as a Thursday, June 43rii :---- ground for divorce. He pointed out that as amended the Bill stood no chance of being afforded facilities in another place.

The Archbishop of Canterbury said the Friday, June 24th :--- position of the Bishops was clear and simple. They supported the Bill introduced because it gave effect to un- controversial proposals for the mend Saturday, June 27th -- ment of the law. Lord Buckmaster had altered the character of the Bill with unfortunate" results. He had inserted an amendment - which they had all along

consistently opposed, and therefore they Monday, June 27th:-. must vote against it.

The Bishop of Durbam repudiated ex- plicitly and decisively the notion that'

weakening the marriage union or of making a concession to the deplorable tendencies to sexual irregularities which

Lord Buckmaster, teplying on the debate, repudiated a suggestion by Lord Selborne that the advocates of the Bill were standing on a slippery slope. He pointed out that for 300 years Scotland had been standing on such & slippery slope and he asked would any noble lord suggest that the people of Scotland had slid. ono single inch nearer perdition than the people of England.

On a division the motion for rejection was defeated by 87 votes to 45, and the Bill was, read a third time and passed:

THE BROTHER'S WIDOW.

MARRIAGE BILL THROUGH

.COMMITTEE.

lr. Rendall's Bill to legalize marriage with a dead husband's brother passed through Standing Committee, and was ordered to be reported to the House of Commons.

Sir Johs Baird challenged & division on Clause 1, which lays down that inarriage with a brother's widow shall not be void as a civil contract, except in certain cases, but the claus was carried; by 18 votes to four.

The Chairman (Sir H. Mackinder) ruled out of order a now clause sug gested by Lord Hugh Cecil, providing that nothing in the Act should give to any person the right to have his mar- riage solemnized in Church according to the form prescribed in the Book of Common Prayer, or to receive Holy Communion according to the use of the Church of England, which he would not have had if this Act had not passed.

JUDGE'S STERN COMMENT

PICTURES.

ON

Mr. Justice Darling made some cuustic remarks on divorce nt the Old Bailey on April 28th in a case, of perjury at the Divorce Court.. One did not know, he said, how many times the judge was deceived. One knew that an enormous proportion of the undefended engen were merely collusive.

"Divorce is becoming so popular that the King's Beach, even, has to be drag ged in to get through the work; and judges who had retired are brought back instead of being allowed to enjoy their old age in eomfort, because there are not judges enough to deal with these cases. And what wonder, if people can come into the Divorce Court and treat it in this fashian 1"

Commenting on the defendant's alleg ed ignorance of Divorce Court proced- ings, Mr. Justice Darling said,

You know what they are now, he went on. "I wish they were different myself. What do they contain? What do people read day. by day but these cases of divereat What are, they looking at but photographs of every adulterer who can bo snapshotted coming out of the courts'

men and women? These and pictures of notorious footballers make up the illustrated papers."

FIGHT WITH AN OCTOPUS.

SCENE ON BOARD AN ATLANTIC LINER.

Passengers who landed at New York from the Cunard liner Caronia giva a vivid description of a battle in the fore castle between the ship's carpenter and

giant octopus

In a gale off the coast of Ireland the vessel took a heavy sea, and the carpen ier went forward to see if any damage had been done. He found an octopus wedged between two winches. It "made a long arm and endeavoured to gather the carpenter to its bosom. The car penter, resisting strenuously, bolaboured the creature with an iron bar. The octopus spouted an inky, fuid in large quantities and fastened several more tentacles around the carpenter. It took the carpenter 15 minutes to kill the creature and free himself from its clutches.

The octopus weighs 40 lbs., and one of its tentacles is over 5ft.. in length. It is now in the liner's storage room, and fis destined for. Liverpool Musetim. Dedin
