They are very numerous in Japan. One or two Shinju figure in the news items every day. They cause very little Comment The news note merely gives hamca and addresses and says the cause for boeking oath was weariness of life and disappointed lore." With Euro- peans disappointed, love " usually means love that is denied the object of its passion. In Japan it has no such 7 which be its real significance is "love because of obstacles can not readily be mutually satisfied, and to attain satisfaction the lovers seek union in so other world. The idea of such union is regarded as an outcome of the Buddhist doctrines, and the ideals of bushido, of which I shall speak later. But if the ider of such union after death in Bud dhistic it is strange that we find no such institutions as love suicide" in India and capecially in China, whose civiliza tion was the teacher of Japan. is mutual suicide, and such suicides are practically unknown in European literature, though suicide for love are frequent.
Are we to asaume because of the fre- quency of these love suicides in Japan. that the passion of love in the Japanese heart is of greater intensity than in the heart of the European? Hardly so. It is to the force of social custom-and partly to religious belief that we must look for the origin of this practice.
In all countries, at all times, there Eave been women who have put an end to, their own lives after the death of their lovera or husbanda. And there
have been men too who have followed their loved ones to the grave, rather than live without them. In India the custom of," suttee." is so strong that oven to day it is with difficulty kept down. And in early Japan the custom of "Junshi," 4-compulsory sutter" by burial alive, was only abolished by the most strict edicts of enlightened tulers. Even in Tokugawa dana, at the death of the Shogun lemitan, at his request several of his followers put an end to their lives. It was the custom in Junshi for the wife to follow her husband to the grave, randin this custom may perhaps be seen the
beginnings of the later love suicide.
THE BEGINNINGS OF "SHINJU,"
O love suicide itself early Japanese literature is strangely silent. The literature of the Nara epoch which col- Tected the scattered traditions of the early ages has nothing to say of such a custom, although there are a few poems in the " Maayoshu which refer to the custom of Banshi. The literature of the Period (780-1150 circa) abounds in erotic writings but no such custom as love suicide is suggested. In the "Genji Monogatari and the Oshitsubo Mono- gatari," the love relations of men and women are faithfully portrayed, even to the point of gross indelicacy, but nothing is found in them which points to such a custom. If instances of such suicides had been numerous some of the diarists of those days would have mentioned them.
No, love suicide in Japan was not a popular custom in the early days, when military rule was strong. It is only with the beginnings of comfort and the growth of luxury" for the common people, that love suicide finds a place in litern ture and life.

THA
SECRET OF 700 YEARS AGO. ROGER BACON INVENTOR OF THE
MICROSCOPE..
A cipher manuscript of Roger Bacon, England's famous thirteenth century monk, proving him to be the inventor of the telescope and the microscope, WILS brought to light at a meeting of scientists and doctors at Philadelphia on April 20th by Mr. W. M. Voynich, the discover er of the manuscript, and Professor W IL Newbold; of the University of Penn- sylvania, who have been working on the cipher for the past two years,
The cipher is composed of six within a

many cipher and has passed through
It has never been solved aince Bacon wrote it-presumably in prison while undergoing his sentence for heresy and necromancy,
Mr. Voynich bought it in 1812 with a lot of manuscripts belonging to the Duko of Farma's family The last previous transfer of the cipher was in 1850, when the celebrated Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher, presented it to the Duke of Farma.
Professor Newbold, in his lecture, ex- plained that Eacou had written the cipher within cipher doubtless for self- protection, because he was 300 to 500 years ahead of his time,
The manuscriptis-divided into four- parte, treating of plants, the heavenly bodier,
the
generation of animal life, and the preparation of drugs.
Professor Newbold declared that Bacon certainly had a selescope 300 years before there is any formal record of the inven- tion of that instrument, because the manuscript contains detailed drawings unrecognisable to the naked eye-but which astronomers instantly recognised us Andromeda's nebula.
There are frequent references in the manuscript to astrology, and indications that Bacon believed that. the heavenly bodies affected men's fortunce.
