CHRISTIAN "REACTION." NATIONS IN PERIL OF RUIN.
Writing in the Peening Standard, Dean Inge says:-" A hook" of short articles and letters evoked by a commun tention from myself under the title Is it a New World! has been published The controversy started by my lately. article went ou for weeks and soceral distinguished men took part in it. The main question discussed was whether wo may reasonably expect a better world after and in consequence of the war, or whether Elijah was right when he sat under A juniper tree and groaned that
· I am not better than my fathers.' Rent pintis-thus belief that the human raco is steadily deteriorating-was not repre- sented, either by myself or my critics"
."
Dean Inge deplores the fact that some people som unable to draw a distinction between the loss of optimistic drains and netun pessimism.. If their idens wore true, our belief in human progress | would be rudely shaken. But the Dean himself claims to be far from pessimistic. the writes:
Not one of the contributors makes the prediction which I seem to myself Lo so on the horizon. In coming to think that before long the world will wit
rent Conservative resetion.
( dislike the question-begging word renation; it is extremely silly to call one swing of the pendulum progress and the next swing restction! But I will (acupt the word, in the scientific sense, the necesary counterpart of all action). Doctrinaires are dangerous people, until they get their innings. when they make such an exhibition of them- solves that they are not asked to play again. Karl Marx has had his innings at last, and he has turned half "Europe (not..our half, fortunately) into a ty good imitation of Gehenna. I think wo may assume that, he and his theories are not likely to trouble the world much longer. A few years ago perhaps the large majority of Russians thought they would be much happier without a monarch. I wonder how many think so now. The lolsheviks betrayed Russin. broke up her armies, handel over her provinces to the enemy, and turned their country into a patrefying carcase. The Socialists all but ruined Italy by their trenson at Caporetto, and (according to Ludendorff, Tirpitz. and others) were the rent cause of the sudden collapse of ermany. Some of them did their best to ruin us at home.
"It is phin from recent experience that religion and loyalty are the only cement for a nation struggling for its existence. The first nation which re govers from the present social epidemic will have the rest of Europe at its mercy, Even more aportant is the complete frustration of all the hopes and promess of the Radical party in internal affairs. I was confidently predicted that dento- tragy would put an end to corruption and establish pure government. It has actually substituted the bribery of classes for that of individuale, until national bankruptcy is in sight. It was con dently predicted that complete dena Crncy would end the danger of revolu- tion by bringing about social equality. We are now held to ransom by a hedy of privileged men, whose incomes, on an average, are far above the average family income for the whole nation. It was confidently predicted that, if civil sedi tion arose, the democratic government, representing the whole people, would put it down without difficulty. Tho Absolute impnience of the Government, in face of organised attack, has been fully and disastrously demonstrated.
These facts have completely, knocked the bottom out of the Radical gramme. All their predictions have been completely falsified Nations will sub- uit to an oppressive Government if it is wise and efficient. They will Rabit to an indifferent Government if it leaves them free and protects their property. Fut a system which, unites plundering anil bhundering, and has nothing else to show for its existence, will soon dis illusion even the doctrinaire. average man does not want to govern the country himself; his molest umbi- tion is to feel his person and property safe, wheth against his own country. men or foreign nations, And he will vad, I think, hy voting for any party which can secure these ends."
The
Dead Inge alludes to a book Intely published by a German, Oswald Spong
ar, under the
Ruin of the pressing title The which, he says, is "on the whole too pessimistic for me.' There is to be a second volume, the denn says, in which the writer means to pro- phesy the rise of a new culture on strongly Christian basis. and Russia is to be the scene of this new flowering-time of the human spirit. It is prophecy," Dean Inge observes, "but I n bold an not at all sure that it is a bad one. The Russians are a loyal and religious race, and they are having an object-lesson, which should last them for centuries. A Christian and Conservative reaction might do great things for the world, if it can escape being captured by the three enemies who are always on the wait to spoil this type of polity. These are the priest, the profiteer, and the Prussian (the bullying militarist). But in any ease, I think the world will soon be ripa for another attempt to gorern itself by faith and loyalty."
JUDGE PROTESTS AGAINST SECRET
TRIALS,
Another judicial protest against the heating of certain cases in camera was inde ut the Old Bailey, recently, by Mr. Jintich Roche, when a charge of incost wens about to be heard.
These secret trials," he said,
"have in detrimental, effect on the administra Lign of justice, and on the lives and con duct of the humble class of citizens.
Many do not know that such an fence is contrary to the law, and thei alence of proper records in the Proin of the ease and of the punishment pre vents the spread of that knowledge,”

Are you
liverish
A common accompaniment of "liverishness" is a feeling of despondency and irritability, Little things. that ordinarily would not disturb you, get mag- nifed out of all proportion to their importance. Perhaps you have throbbing headaches, or blurred vision. Or you may be troubled with billousness and depression. All this comes about because the liver is not doing its work properly. What is wanted is an effective liver corrective and tonic. and there is no better help for a tired and overworked liver and stomach than Mother Seigel's Syrup, made from the medicinal extracts of more than ten varieties of roots, barks and leaves. Just 30 drops in water, taken after meals, will make all the difference in your well-being. Test Mother Selgel's Syrup for yourself, and prove its worth.
