We read in the Viadivostock Daily News that in order to raise funds for combatting the plague epidemic in that port thoroughly and efficiently the autho rities imposed a one-time tax of all in dependent people over 19 years of age, by May 13th. This tax is graded Domestics, labourers, cabbies, etc., pay to occupations and professions, one rouble each; employs, artisans, and clerks of municipal institutions per rent, of the month's salary: persons of liberal profess and so on 15 coubles ench such as lawyers, doe tors, engineers Furthermore, industrial, commercial and proprietorship taxes möging up to 100 raubles according to trading license are imposed, and any une not paying within the stipulated time 138ys hvefold there after. By this means it is hoped to raise something like 500 to 600 thousand roubles (gold basis) from the entire pro vince, which is considered ample, pro. vided the epidemic does not progress too fast before the necessary arrangements can be made to tackle it properly. With the restricted working, so far something, like 80,000 roubles have already been ex pended and one cannot even say that the situation has been stored.
