The
The Nippon Yasen Kaisha has madi fied its passenger fares on the China run, raising the first-class rates from Shang- hai and Hongkong to Japan by about 30 Per cent., though second and third class arates are to be left as they are

Jappo contemporary, that the NY.K. rates hitherto in force were lower than those of the Toyo Kisen Kiasha, the Canadian Pacific Ocean Service Company, and the Pacific Mail Steamship Com- pay, the increased rates being the same as those charged by these companies. A PACIFIC. FREIGHT
CONFERENCE:
Another Pacific freight conference is proposed, this time at Manila, says the Japan Advertiser. At present there are two freight conferences for the Orient-
service,—the America
China Pacific Freight Conference at Hongkong and, the Japan Freight Conference at Yokohama. These conferences are designed to prevent competition between the steamship.com- panies by establishing. conventional freight tariffs, but shipments from
· Manila are not covered by either confer- ence. As a result, the Manila field has been left to free competition.
It is now reported that the Japanese members of the Japan Freight Conference have been approached by the American steamship companies interested with proposal to establish a freight confer- ence for Manila. It is chiefly. American yessels which are active in that part of the world, and moreover shipments of
principal
exports from there, such
the
as hemp, oil, and sugar, are now very dull. The Japanese shipping companies, therefore, do not feel it urgently neces sary to establish a Manila freight con- ference, but as it is desirable to havo such arrangements in view of the prevail- ing depression, they will agree to the American proposal. It is accordingly ex pected that the proposed Manila Freight Conference will soon be a reality,
In that case, all the shipments between the Orient and America will be covered by conventional freight tarifin, as 'Manila abipments have hitherto been the only exception, except, of course in respect of shipping concorns which do not belong to the freight conferences..
