Sie Napier Shaw, our leading metro- rologist, has pronounced against the possibility of weather control. From the earitest tunes man has dreamed of foreing. to his will run and sun, cold and drought, whose

uncerinin incidence affects so many of his undertakings. He has addressed entreaties or threats to the skies, wooed them with libations or affronted them with weapons. In modern scientific days he has employed or pro- posed to employ gunfire

or rockets, spraying them with liquid air, or elec trien discharges. But the wind still bloweth where, it listeth and the clouds discharge their largesses of cala capri- cio sly. Sir Napier admits the success of many Iaboratory experiments and sets ne limit to the possible invention of de 'vices still more ingenious. But he is Incredulous as to their application on any useful scale. His reasons for his went of faith are convincing. They are based on the magnitude of the forces which would have to be controlled. The air in a cab menstring 83ft. in each direction weighs more than a ton to condense even a thin fo in buch an area would require an expenditure of energy equal to 'fiye horsepower hours. Even if the fog, were stationary, the clearing of a few hundred square yards would require tong of thous sands of horse-power hours. But fogs re always drifting, and Sir Napier Shaw worked out the consumption of energy required for the practical object of clearing the fog from an aerodrome 400 yards wide. It came to 400 or 300 tons. of coal per hour. As with fog, so with rain and hoil.. Until some new source of cheap energy is discovered, efforts, at weather dontrul are likely to be defeated By the huge senle on which the operations would have to be conducted.
