· ENGLISHMAN AS THE "MISSING LINK." JIGSAW FOSSIL OF EARLY ANCESTOR.

England at a very remote period of time was a Darwininn Garden of Eden, the home of the true missing link-the Piltdown man.

This important contribution to one of the fiercest scientific controversies of the age was undo by Professor Keith, in a lecture at the Royal Institution last month

Critics have alleged." mid the ge Lurer, in a proper vein of patriotism, that the ancient Englishman was made up by fitting the fossil lower jaw of an extinct breed of chimpanzees to the fossil aknil of a peculiar race of mankind. Flo was, in short, the creation not of nature. but of a geologist.

Professor Keith proceeded to make the riest of dry bones of this theory of pre- historic monkey grafting.

In our oldest Englishman," he de manded, to be eut in, two, and made into a man and a chimpanzee? Was he not rather just the evolutionary product Darwin taught us to expect-a man with the marks of the ape still plain to see?" He made a dramatic" point out of the Circumstanco that this pretty little jigsaw fossil-probably the earliest Coalitionist had been discovered less than thirty years after Darwin's death and within thirty miles of his home."

Only one country, Java, ha remarked, could claim an ancestor of even greater Antiquity that the Piltdown

mad.

amorous situations," observed the lecturer, are thus arising as we attempt to unravel the fossil ancestors of man. It grows increasingly difficull, however, for the critics of Darwin to say that he was a fulse prophet."

"GET ON OR GET OUT”. PUBLICITY THE TRADE DISEASE. CURE.

Mr. C. F. Higham, M., speaking before the Federation of British Music Industries, said:-There is no use grum. bling about German or any other com petition. "Get ou, with your work, and advertise. Don't stagnate. If you want to hold your market advertise your wares. The British manufacturer has got a fit of the blues. That won't help him to make money, to hold trade or stop un- employment., Buck up! We didn't beat the Germans because we grumbled when our boys were being pushed to Calais, but because we fought on-stuck to it-simply would not be Beaten. Don't let any bad Finance Act, any hold-up of industry, or anything else stand in your way. Get If you on, or get out. If you fear-bad trade you will get it more and more. want to sell more goods advertise them in the Press and keep doing it. Publicity will cure any tradó disease-ven the blues, It's the greatest force for good- will and good trade in the world to-day. Use it, Advertising is the life of trade. If trade ever, needed livening up it needs it now. Don't talk about German or American or Japanese goods-that adver tises them. Talk about your goods. Be proud of thein and have the courage to advertise them now."

SURGEON'S COURAGE. OPERATION ON HIMSELF.

Dr. Evan Kane, a well-known Pennsyl- many vanian surgeon, believes that people have an unjustified fear of ope rations and die needlessly. To remove this delusion in the case of appendicitis, he sat upon the operation table, last month, using only a local anesthetic, calmly opened his abdomen and removed. his appendix. In the case of others he has done this operation nearly 4,000 times. Other surgeons and nurses wit nessed the unique expérience. As usual, Dr. Kiné, allowed his assistants to close the wound.

Seen by reporters a few hours after the operation, Dr. Kane said he was feel- ng fine. The patient justified his work on the ground that he wanted to prove to individuals with weak hearts that a general anesthetic in removing the ap pendix is not absolutely necessary. Daily Telegraph."

A SCHOOL FOR BRIDES.

A school for prospective brides has been opened at Chicago under the auspices of the Y.W.C.A. with a course in "trousseau suggestions and home management," from which girl pupils will graduate to prac tical methods of holding a husband and keeping him happy." The foundation upon which all the instruction is based is cooking. Students are required primarily to master a variety of menus and learn attractive methods of serving, meals, Secondly, the wife-to-be is to be guided past the reefs of extravagance by being instructed how to make up the family budget and buy wisely. Thirdly comes a course in home beauty," in which the bride is taught the vital importance of appearing attractive across the breakfast table. After they have become expert in sewing, making blouses, scarfs, and lingerie, and having matriculated from the first-aid course, so as to be capable of home nursing for slight illacases; pros pective brides will be given a finishing. touch regarding the art of conversation and story-telling.-Daily Telegraph.
