The Magistrate (Mr. R. E Lindsell), on Saturday, announced his decision to commit the defendant for trial at the Criminal Sessions in the case in which Mr. J. H. Van Gennep Lubre, managing director of the Holland Parific Trading Co., Ltd., charges Sham Lai Sang, managing partner of the Kowlood Stores. with forgery and false pretences.

The complainant alleges that the defendant cut down a contract-form, which had been signed but only partially alled up, in order to forgen document purporting to be a receipt entitling the defendant to $5,000 from the, complain- ant.

The defence is that the receipt is a genuine document and is a receipt for

a deposit of $3,000, made by defendant as security for goods he undertook to sell for the complainant's firm.

Mr. D. H. Blake (of Messrs. Wilkinson & Orist) appeared for the complainant.: and Mr. A. H. Crew (of Messrs. Hastings

Hastings), for the defendant.

The Magistrate said. The prosecution hays made out an case, on which I am bound to commit.

Mr. Crew said the defendant would reserve his defence.

The defendant was then formally com mitted for trial at the next Criminal Sessions.

Mr. Blake asked that the bail be materially increased. and suggested $10,000, being twice the amount men- tion in the promissory note.

The Magistrate: I shall increase the bail to $1,000-8500 in cash and a security of $500 will be sufficient.

Mr. Crew: I suggest that if it stays. where it is now it will be ample.

The Magistrate: I think $250 is not sufficient. T

Mr. Crew: 1 suggest that in view of the way the evidence has beëŋ given and the way the case has shaped, that the present bail is sufficient.

The Magistrate said he would require a bond of 3500 in cash and ona surety for $500.
