A GENERAL'S ROMANCE.
STRANGE FRENCH STORY,
A remarkable story was told, last month; "of a Canadian general, a:con- script of the Class 1991, who came before French Council of Revision," and was passed as good for (service..
He i General Brutine), 30. years of age, who earved through the war with the Cano- dian troops, and rose to the rank of general, The story of his life is interent ing. As a child he went to Canada with his parents. When he was 18 years of age, he desired to fulfil his obligations towards his country, and returned to France and volunteered for military ser vice, contracting an engagement for four years. In 1903 he forgot to have his |name registered in' his class, and two
years later returned to Canada.
When the war broke out General Brutinel went to the French Consul, whe advised, kim to become enrolled in the Canadian corps. He followed "this ad vice, and, it is stated, presented the Canadian army with forty mounted machine-guns. When he arrived in France he asked to be allowed to keep hia French nationality, and "a. Presiden- | tini- decreo" issued on April 20th, 1015, gave him this satisfaction. In the war le proved himself a hero, distinguishing himself in the Nord and around Amiens. Six times he was mentioned in "Army [Orders, and was given quick promotion, rising to major, then to colonel, and finally to brigadier-general. He received a number of decorations, including that of Officer of the Legion of Honour,"and on March. Oth, 1918, the Croix de Guerre was conferred upon him.
As & Frenchman he had not come be. fore his Council of Revision, and, there fore, his dossier was got in order. Ao cording to La Liberté, he could not bene- it from the equivalent of services rendered in Allied armies," "în accord, ance with the decrea of 1915, and so tha decided to fulfil his obligations. Ha appeared before" the Council of Revision on January 21st without the marks of his military rank and his decorations, and, as has been said, was declared "bon Pour la service."
Brigadier General Raymond Brutínel, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O.," is a lieutenant- colonel and temporary brigadier-genera! in the Canadian forces. He served throughout the war from 1914 to 1918, receiving the D.S.O. in 1916, the O.MG. in 1918, and the C.B. in 1919. In addi- tion to the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre, he also possesses, the Italinn -örfer of 8.5. Maurico And Lazarus.
MR. FORD'S UTOPIA, FARMERS TO WORK AND COWS TO DISAPPEAR.
The Ford Car is to be followed by the Ford Paradise, Mr. Henry Ford is now claiming public attention as the architect of new. Utopin, of which the foundationa
are already laidance between his
By means of an industry and the farming population, Mr. Ford proposes to change the face of the United States and abolish manufac turing citics, with their squalor and *industrial filth." Briefly expressed, his idea is that the urban industrial worker now lives in congested and unhealthy arcas, which he calls concentration for parasitic manipulation of the necessities of life," causing unnatural unrest in men's minds, and ineldentally robbing agriculture of its man-power. "They have created the spectacle of the farmer's products having to be transported to these great centres, treated and manipulated before being transported back agnia and sold to the farmers," says Mr. Ford. On the other hand, he says that except dur ing the short, food-producing suson the farmer's life is spent in enforced idle- ness amid a few cows,'
He therefore to manufacture"
Ford Cars, and, above all traclacturo Authers of small factories situated in towns and villages, making, use of water power whenever possible. The farmer will then be able to work in the winter to increase his wealth by taking appli ances which will enable him to fardt with redoubled efficiency.. Lo summer all hands in the factories will become tillars of the soil, thus solving the farmer's pro blem of the supply of farm labour...
This is merely the broad outline of the scheme the details of which are equally intriguing Mr. Ford proposes to abolish horses and cows as anachronisms The horse he contemptuously dismisses 45:1 clumsy huy-motor of one Horse power. The cow, also, is a poor makeelift, Mr. Forda laboratories bave demonstrated their ability to take the same cereals that cows cat and transform them, into milc infinitely superior in every way to the dirty product of these discredited animals|p
Lows are the crudest machines in the world, is Mr. Ford's withering descrip tion, their ment, he adds, is entirely unnecessary, as Ford Food manufactured from artificial milk can beat any ment for nutriment and digestibility.
The first branch of the new paradise," the head office of which remains, in Detroit, has been opened at Ford, a town of 1,500 inhabitants 20 miles away, whore Valves for Ford tractors and motors are manufactured. Mr. Ford mentions this. town`as a case in point where a great concern can use its wealth for the general good. The little town needs agter, so the Ford Company is building in conjunction with the inhabitantie true! avoiding the necessity of the town's struggling under a load of debt for years
Arrangements bave been made to begin. the immediate introduction of the new scheme in 18 other communities, and-
+-in reply to a question as to when he would begin to make inroads on American cities: Mr. Ford said, Fifteen years ago, there were no farm tractors or ships wireless 25 years ago there were only three or four motors in the world, 35-years ago there wore no electric care; 30 years ago, there were no telephones.””.
