The objects of the leader cable matern are to enable ships, by means of sub- good marine sound signals, to make Jandfall in foggy weather, to lead ships into harbour, to lend a ship from open water through a restricted channel to open water. to-give warning of outlying dangers, and to assist a vessel to keep a straight course from port to port and thus save fuel. The system was invented an by the British Navy, which made exceedingly successful use of it in war time, but owing to the great potential value of the system to the Mercantile Marine during the war the Admiralty have not disclosed the full methods of working it until now. Today's tests were designed as a practical demonstration to all the Powers of the utility of such cables. A leader cable has already been laid in the Ambrose Channel, New York Harbour.

NIPPON YUSEN KAISHA. NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES. FROM: EUROPE and STRAITS. HE Company's Steamship »

The Portsmouth cable, after an experi- mental existence of over a year, has now became a permanent addition to the navigating facilities of the port, and all large war vessels are being. fitted with the receiving apparatus necessary to eliable them to use it. This apparatus consists of two coils of wire, one placed on the port and one on the starboard side of the ship. These coils are connected to telephones installed on the bridge, and by means of dynamos at its shore end the cabla is charged with an alternating cur- rent. A signal key inserted in the cable at the transmitting station enables the current to be so broken that any pre- arranged signal or Morse code letter can be sent along it. An amplifier is used to strengthen the sound of the signals receiv ed by the ship. When approaching har bour in foggy weather a ship shapes her course so as to cross the end of the cable. By listening in with the bridge telephones the navigating officer is able to tell when Goods are landed. the cable has been picked up. The Optional Goods will be carried on unless strength of them either to part or star-instractions are given to the contrary before

board tells him which side of the cable he is on and by keeping to the one hand of it by following the sound signals he is led safely into part. The Portsmouth cable gives out a clear musical note which can be easily heard for a distance of about 300 yards on either side of the cable.
