NATIONAL "HUMILITY DAYS
·OF CHINA,
REMARKABLE DOCUMENT TAUGHT TO CHINESE, SCHOOLBOYS. WHAT CHINA HAS LOST, '
A translation of a lesson on contem- porary history, which is now being taught Chinese students at their primary schools and which is probably typical of many others of a similar character, all appealing to the strong sense of honour and patriotism of Young China, is pub lished below. The Chinese correspondent, who sends to the N.-C. Daily News, em phasizes it as a sign that this country 1 gradually waking up from her habitual Iethargy
An old proverb, saya, “A person should never be wholly devoid of shame." This is not only true of an individual, but also true of 'n 'nation. Our country has often failed deplorably or suffered defeat in hor diplomatic dealings, a most disgraceful fuct that it would be well for us to remember.
Between the reigns of Tao Kuang and Hsien Fung in the Ching Dynasty, wa conceded Hongkong and opened Canter, Foochow, Amoy, Ningpo and Shanghai as commercial ports, as a result of the opium was Russia, taking advantage of the Taiping" rebellion, forced us to sign the Aigua Trenty by which the whole of our territory, on the northern bank of the Heilungkiang was lost to us. At the same time, an army of Great Britain in vaded and occupied Canton; and together with a French Force also invaded and occupied Taku. It, was then that the Tientsin Treaty was concluded.
Later, as one Government had not kept good faith, the joint Army advanced and threatened Peking, and burned and des. troyed Yuan Ming Yuan, "culminating in our throwing open Ticatsin as a com mercial port and conceding (s part of) Kowloon to Great, Britain. The Russian Minister, considering himself to hara. rendered help in the conclusion of the Tientsin Treaty, exacted from us the con cession of Vladivostock as a price for bis service;

In the first year of Kuang Hou, & British subject entering Yunnan was killed, whereupon the British Beet enter ed the Chihli Bay and forced us to sign the Chefoo Treaty, The Mohammedza rebellion resulted in our conclusion of the Ili Treaty with Russia. Soon after that, France occupied our Annam, and Great Britain proclaimed her protection over Burma. By the war of 1895, Japan forced us to recognize the independence of Korea, and concede to her, our islands of Formosa and Penhu.
Because of the massacre of certain Ger- man missionaries by a mob at Tenochow, Shantung, Germany coerced us into leas ing her our Kinochow Bay. Following Germany's example, Russia "leased cur Port Arthur, and Tairen and Great Britain our Kowloon Peninsula and Wei- haiwei France also based her claim for a leasehold on our Kwangchowan on a missionary case.
Owing to the anti-missionary rising of the Boxers a joint army of eight Powers entered Peking, and peace was obtained only by our agreeing to pay these Powera a-huge indemnity and demolish our Taku Forts.
Since the Republic was Jestablished, Russia instigated Outer Mongolia to declare its independence and forced us to agree thereto, whereby our Northern Dependency was lost to us. (This was written before 1919-Trans.) Japan sub- mitted twenty-one demands to which she tried to coerce us into signing our assent.
This was the most recent case of our. humiliation.
We have only been able to refer to matters of some magnitude, which seem Besides these, already so numerous..
there have been minor incidents of similar nature too numerous to mention. Should not all our citizens make a point to keep these humiliating events always fresh in their memory)
