MEDICINE IN INDIA. WESTERNISING THE EAST:
There is probably no more absorbing topie in the whole realm of medical science than the study of Medicine in India," interesting alike on account of its antiquity and by reason of its mag- mitude. On January 24th. Dr. Cecil Webb- Johnson made it the subject of a paper which, he read to the members of the Fast India Association. at Victoria Street, Westminster.
Of the Hindu physician it is true to say that he is born, not made. for, as Dr. Webb-Johnson explained. the prac tico is invariably handed down ffom father, to son. Hindu medicine teaches that there are three all pervading forces in the body, and that as long as they are in a state of equilibrium the body remains in health. A special study e made of the effect of the seasons and the influence of the sun and moon on plants, as well as the time they take to grow. and the exact period at which they should be gathered. Having extracted the juices from the plants, they classify them as either hot or cold in power according to the influence of the sun and moon, and ' in this hot and cold theary they were followed by Galen, the Greek physician. They hold that from January to June the beat of the san sucks up the juices, giving them heating properties, and from June to December the sun's rays produce a cooling effect on plants The Hindus have also made a special study of hydro- pathy, by examining the waters of their lakes, rivers, wells, and springs, and one of their peculiar beliefs is that, when washing, cold water should be added to hot, not hot to cold. Physical culture and breathing exercises, massage, anoint- ing the whole body with oil.before bath! ing, and the rubbing of oil into the soles of the feet, are recommended as aids to the preservation of health and longevity, Quoting the Indian proverb. "He that is devoid of wisdom desireth much food," the lecturer remarked that, as fully half the diseases met with are caused by in- judicious, unsuitable, and over feeding. it was a pity this proverb was not taken to heart more in Europe.

YUSEN KAISHA B. YASUDA, Manager.
Passing on to the consideration of Western ideas of sanitation, Dr. Webb. Johnson made it clear that their intro- duction into so vast a country as India must of necessity be gradual, and many Indian customs and superstitions must die before the rates of mortality and morbidity fail to a reasonable level...The uneducated Indian, he observed, must be taught that cleanliness is next to god. ness, and not next to impossible, as it in with so many of them, and that frequent bathing of the body in filthy water is not sufficient to ensure good health. After tracing the history of Western medicine in India from the days of the East India Company, when the services of ships surgeons were requisitionéd na the neces sity arose to the inauguration of the Indian Medical Service, Dr. Webb-John- Ron went on to say that the latter service wns passing. gradually but surely, from Indians, and it was very doubtful if any British would be left in the service ip twenty or thirty years' time. From 1855 to 1913 only 100 Indians took commissions in the LMS., yet in 1013, at the entrance examination, the list was headed by three Indians, and during the war many tem
granted to were commissions porary Indians, and the London schools have ever-increasing numbers on their lists. To-day the question is, what is to become of the medical services in India f for there is great difficulty in obtaining suitable candidates for the 1.M.S.. in spite of in- ereneed pay, pension, and better condi tions of service. After discussing the question, both in India and at home with 1.M.S. officers and young medical men, he had come to the conclusion that the fear of the future was the only deterrent. It' cannot be denied that the average Eng- lishman objects to the possibility of being a junior officer under Indians. There was at the present time a wave of discontent
amongst all medical men in India con
nected with the various services, and there was little doubt that the status and pas of the assistant surgeons and the sub-assistant surgeons should heim proved,
Concluding his paper, Dr. Webb Johnson said he believed that India' would recover from this present state of unrest, and Attila's horn would flow ver with plenty. The uplifting of women. Indian would follow in due course. medical men, educated in Europe, and conversant with all the latest scientific knowledge, would be the custodians of their country's becalth, and carry out, he felt confident, their work according to the highest traditions of the most noble of all professions.
In the ensuing discussion Dr. Castel. luni said it was very foolish on the part of European doctors to be continually laughing at native methods of treatment And ridic ling them. Quinine was known and used in India for hundreds of years before. European doctors" decided upon its use.
Colonel Elliott said their view of the future of India must be imperial. The time had not yet come for relaxing the European hold on India, but in dealing with it they must send only the best to India. To take away European control from Indian would be to inflict upon that
