uffered somewhat by reason of the spell of damp weather that set in a day or 10 before the exhibition. Absence of sun shine undoubtedly inade the flowers look! less effective but the uncritical observer. found much to admire and enjoy. Roses ero undoubtedly a feature of the show and in this class Mr. Nicholson, as usual, Barried all before him. Cut dowers, us a whole were very good indeed, and table decorations showed a high standard of Vegetables, rapecially artistic skill: leeks, were well-grown, except that those from the Peak suffered by comparison with the others. The standard attained by some Bower growers was so high that the awards, especially the first prizes, were confined to a comparatively small number of exhibitors
"Flowers were sold during the after noon na behalf of the Famine Relief Fund, and thanks to generous donors who guve sums running into three figures for single nosegays, a very satisfactory sum was collected.

Mr. L. N. La, in asking Lady Stubbs to present the prizes, said the Society. felt it was entitled to congratulations on the exhibition. Down below, the exhibits seemed gen- eraly not quite up to the standard of former years. In a parenthesis. Mr. Leefe advised rose growers to obtain. Mr. Nicholson's pam2, Mrs. A. R. Lowe.. phlet, published by the Society, in order
to beneft from his experience. He also thanked Mr. Nicholson, Mr. He Kom Tong, and others for providing flowers to be sold for the benefit of the Famine Relief Fund. Already, $700. had been raised by this means. Mr. Loefe thought the Society maintained its popularity, and be urged the desirability of members | persuading their friends to join. He con- cluded by thinking the judges and all who had contributed to the success of thu-show, especially Mr Gibbs, whose antiring energy and skill had been placed at the disposal of the Society on more than one occasion before.

Other witnesses gave corroborative said the other coolies laughed at the evidence as to the assault, but one of them defendant's threats, and did not take them seriously.
In consequence of an impression that the defendant possessed a dagger, the police visited his house, and though they found no dagger they discovered there two bottles of Deanis Mpanies Liqueur Brandy and one of Gordon's Dry Gin. These formed the subject of the charge of theft: The complainant, as compradore gave evidence that only two consignments of the brandy had been received in a con- dorable period and Messra, Donnelly & Whyte were the sole agents in Hongkong for that particular brand. The cases were intact on arrival but a check of stor and anles revealed that five bottles of the brandy, five of another sort, and one of Gordon's Dry Gin were unaccounted for.
The defendant admitted taking the bottles, but said he regarded them 16 surplus and considered he was entitled to Othors, he said, them as perquisitics. were more greedy than he was. He denied the assaults
It was elicited that the defendant was
an ex-banishce but that the period of his banishment (five years) expired years ago.
