Speckled Mouse (winner of the Trial Nate) which in the Selling Sweeps of the provigus night had become first favourite for the Derby, was backed by only 179.

Mr. Knoll had ridden Speckled Mouse to victory in the Trial Plate, but in the Derby this pony's rider was Mr. Wullenmuir, and possibly

because the jockey had had no previous success during the meeting, the public regarded his chances in the race with less enthusiasm as the backing in the pari- mutuel clearly showed. There was some surprise when the names of starters went up to find among them two ponies which had been reported lame-Mr. G.-H. Potts Invincible King (with Mr. Hill riding) and Mr. Macgregor's The Renown (with Mr. White up). It had not been expected that these porties would face the starter. Out of 33 ponies entered for the race only eight came out. The race seemed to belong to one of the Dahlias-Hope |Dablia being most heavily backed.
