At 40 a man is either, a fool or A physicina; at so he "is either a goller or dead. So, at least, runs the conclusion of an ingenious researcher-he must remain anonymous-who has recently sought an explanation of the truly astonishing per- formances of our octogenarians of the green. His observations were conducted "rather - furtively, but they bear the stamp of a scientiño ardour which is convincing. They were not all made by himself.
If we begin with the statistical side we get the following table showing the physical appearance of 10 men, of 80 or over, who play golf regularly:

Very stout octogenarians are seldom met with, yet the significance of this frot had not been given dus weight. It re- mained to inquire whether the relatively square condition of most of these 10 old men was constitutional, or merely the result of great age. The information ab tained pointed to some extent away from both these possibilities:-

The two men, who had been stout at 60. said that they took up goll after that age on the advice of medical men, who suggested more exercise as a means of relieving stoutness. They were not stout until about 40, when they began to adopt more sedentary habits than they had for-, merely, been accustomed to.... One of the moderately atout men of 40 told a similar story. The others had begun to play for reasons unconnected with health.
It seemed, then, as if golf in some way acted against the oncoming of stoutness, and further, as if stoutness is a less fre quent associate of great age, than lean- ness. The point left to be dealt with was the manner in which got might be ex pected to reduce stoutness.
There are many ready-made explana- tions, such as the stimulating effect of exercise. But these do not entry us very far.
The investigator in question took occasion to observe certain stout për- sons carefully, and noted after a time that the movement of the chest during breath- ing which these displayed was grently reduced. The stout man's chest seemed to be immobile, so that even had it.been constricted his breathing would not have been much interfered with. He carried on his breathing with nis diaphragm and. the muscles of his body.

This, it was seen at once, is equiva lent to saying that the inward-sucking power of the chest is very considerably reduced in stout men. Instead of all the walls of this area the body expanding. only, one wall, the floor or diaphragm, expand. Now the snction of the opening chest draws air to the lungs, and also draws blood from the veins back to the heart and lungs. On this depends to some extent the efficiency of the circu- Intion.
Thus, an immobile chest tends to pro- duce a poor circulation. The veins are badly emptied and the blood is in sufficiently oxygenated. Combusion in the tissues is reduced, and the unburnt material is laid down as fnt. Thus the stout man with the motionless chest would tend to become stouter and his circulation would fail little by little.
It is here that gelf plays its part. In the act of driving, for example, the posi- tions imposed on the body are such that its muscles must become firm. Breathing cannot now be carried on only by the diaphragm, since the descent of this is interfered with: Consequently the chest must be open, and the muscles which open the chest must develop.
Here is the Recret. The re-opening chest improves the circulation by reliev ing the congestion in the veins. Mare. oxygen is available and the fat is burnt ap. The unhealthy stout man growe leaner.
