PRE-HISTORIC BALL.

WONDERFUL ALBERT, HALL SCENE

Last March the Chelsea Arts Club stretched its combined -imaginations to the extreme conanes of the fature in ht quest of inspiration for their annual fanoy-dress ball at the Albert Hall; last month they borrowed their ideas from the "dimmest reaches of the past. The palm goes to the past, undoubtedly. Ex- copt on cular evidence one could never have" believed that such beauty and splendour existed in the era which have left no history, dent

Following the methods of archæology, the ball, committed allowed itself plenty of elbow room. made, a survey of all the world over a period of, roughly, 40,000 years, taking in the Mesozoic and Paleozole-- Ages for the sake of the pterodactyls and other picturesque mens, ters This admitted the cave men, of whom there were several convincing specimens among the dancers, but it also allowed for the introduction of repre sentatives of the legendary or mythical civilisations which centred in the East before the Flood Hate there was oppor-"

tunity for beautiful and elaborate costume, and the opportunity was seized. There were ladies of fashion from an- cient Babylon, and dandies out of im- memorial Egypt. There were no meani of confirming the fact, but the members of one gorgeous group appeared to have studied with effect the styles prevalent among the Aztecs, and several had inter- preted the scope of the ball rather freely' .. by arrying themselves in the beautiful costume of the ancient Greeka.

But the chote of the event was given by Mr. Aug Aus John in his design, for, the huge Sun Temple. This vast mono- lithic structure was just what Stone. henga must have looked like in its hey- day, sad the paleozoic landscape, daringly copied from Mr. John's paint- ings by volunteers from the Slade School, was everything a pre-historic landscape should be. Against this background was performed one of the most brilliant and imaginative pieces of pageantry ever seen at the Albert Hall. It represented the earliest religions ceremony of which authentic record remains, and was called "The Origin of Christmas.”

This is what occurred. At a moment which was supposed to be the brink of dawn (and was not, in fact, far short of it) Aurora, the Goddess of the Morning, clad in a rosy veil, emerged from the entrance of the Temple, and, attended by her priestesses, approached the altar, over which hang a large golden disc. After a pause of intense stillness the goddess struck the sitar, and immediately the trus deity, the Sun, appeared above the horizon, his first rays reflecting dazzlingly from the polished surface of the galden disc. Aurora's rosy veil evaporated, and the priestesses commenced to sacrifice fruit and fowers at the altar's perpetual fire. The business of the disc was nó mere invention; the plate was repro- duction of a small golden replica of the original found in Ireland... The priestesses, who belong to the Chelsea School of Art) were chosen for their beauty, according to the ancient pro jedico, and it was said that they had paid such strict attention to the minutes of the rite they that had all gilded their toes, Mies Dorothy Dean, proved a pear- leas Aurora. And this, it was dogmativ cally affirmed, was the origin of Christ- mas, the pagan welcome to the Sun on bis return after the Winter solstice. In the sacrifice of fruit was the germ of the idea of plum pudding and mince-pies

Another brief pageant, artistically con- 17: ceived and beautifully carried out, was that of "" The Triumph of Bacchus," by ladies of the Central School of Art." Å different kind of success was scored by the energetic gentlemen who constituted the interior economy of "Archie," "Guerie," and other fearsome Mesozoic Vertebrates which from time to time spread dismay among the dancers.--

Special pains were devoted to the pre- paration of the programme of dance music and no fewer than fifteen new com- positions were played most of them one- steps and fox-trots. Everything that America or Europa has produced in the way of a dande, novelty was provided. Mr. Darewski had six characteristic mea- xures. Several vocal numbers adapted. to dance tempo, in the American fashion, were introduced, and went very well, notably When You're Alone," "Flease," Tulip Tima" and "Somebody." "You Promise Me," also a one-step song, was very pretty indeed. "La Veeda," a Spanish fox-trot, won uproarious ap- proval; but the success of the night was Oh, By Jingo,' which is known all over the States as the "Nut" Indian one-step. "Somebody Dearie," a fox-trot that owes much to Chopin, made very pleasant music, as did also" Rose of the Orient," & voluptuous waltz, and the Czecho-Slay waltz called "A Little Dutch Girl:"

THE MODERN GIRL,

INTELLECTUAL DOLLARD.”

The Congress of Librarians assembled at Chicago from all parts of the country recently, voted that the modern girl, judged by, her taste for literature, is an intellectual dillard. The keepers, of the country's bookshelves, have noted that young femining Americs, with her knee- length frocks and pretty face, tries to look learned by wearing, heavy, horn-rimmed spectacles, but it is charged, she dis closes, ber shallowness by ordering books with the slightest and fluffiest contents A young lady desiring to study up for an examination in English," says the librarians, is just as likely as not to aak for The four horsemen with the ery sipelas, by that Spanish cave man" "and" in seeking poetry the average young woman will wish for something jazzy." The librarians reported that there is no demand" now-a-days for war books, so popular a year ago. Instead, the public are devouring works on spiritualism, occultism and "new thoughia,”
