On the occasion of the retirement of the Chinese Minister in London, Japan paid a delightful compliment to China following on January 8th by entertaining the re. Nemof Stoner tiring Minister, H.E. Sao-Ka Alfred Stew Fo and Madame Sze at a farewell luncheongmila in the banqueting chamber of the King Wong Kei Edward VII. Rooms, Hotel Victoria, London, The function was held under the auspices of the Japan Society, and the Japanese Ambassador (Baron Haya ahi) presided over a gathering of reprendrai bould be lodged with MAG-
sentatives of both nations-resident in London.
"After the toasts of "The King," "The President of China" and "The Emperor of Japan" had been pledged, "the Chair- man proposed the health" of HE the Chin se Minister and Madame Sze. He said his Excellency had been very kind' and friendly to the Japan Society. They all regretted that he and his charming (Rear, wife were leaving them soon. hear.) He (the Japanese "Ambasador). had spent a great many years in China. Many changes had taken place and were taking place in that country-politically, socially, and in other directions. Under these circumstances China was to be con- gratulated upon having an intelligent man like their guest representing 'China abroad. (Cheers.) He heard that he was going to Washington. Friendship with America was Accessary, not only in Europe, not only in Japan, "but in China, and he, at least, was glad that China was sending a man like his Ex- cellency to represent that country in Washington (Cheors) He carried with him their best goodwill and wishes." (Hear, haar.) They would all remember him and whatever happened in China, he (the chairman) could assure him that China would have the sincere support not only of England but of America and of Japan. (Cheers.)
INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP.
His Excellency Bao-Ka Sze in acknow ledgment, said: On behalf of my wife and myself I have to express our sincere thanks to the Japan Society for the com- pliment they have been good enough to pay us in inviting us to this farewell gathering. We appreciate deeply the vary kind remarks that have just been made about us, and also the very cordial manner in which, yon, ladies and gentle men, have received this toast courtesies that have been extended to as by the Japan Society since our arrival in this country, over six years ago, have been many, and our relations with the members of the society have been most pleasant and agreeable In future years

our residence in this country, we shall always recall with much pleasure the many occasions on which we have enjoyed the gracious hospitality of the society. To me the gathering to-day has many points of significance. The first point to be noted is that learned societies like the Japan Society, the China Society, the Royal Asiatic Society, and many others have been founded by the English people in this great metropolis for the purpose. of better acquainting themselves with foreign countries, and their civilisation and ripstitutions. Although institutions in England such as those for education, art, literature, and others are wall ad

this meeting proves that while East may
be East and West West in certain things, there is a broad field of human inter- f:course,pn which we can meet and act in common. The assertion that the twain, East and West, shall never meet, whatever it means, is certainly not true in every particular. Gatherings like this prove that we can meet, and do meet, and act in common, and both bene-

Proposing the health of the Japanese Ambasador his Excellency said his per sonal relations with Baron Hayashi had been very pleasant, as they had also been with his two distinguished predecessors Marquie Inouye and Count? Chinda. From what he know of him he was con fident that the manliers of the several communities in London who might have relations, official or social, with him, would have reason to consider themselves fortunate that the duty of maintaining the reputation of the Japanese Embassy for easy accessibility had fallen on Baron Hayashi.
