EIGHT CYLINDER AUTOMOBILES

This year's Touring Car offers many refine- ments which should make even more popular this widely favored family automobile.

Simplicity and ease of operation make it the ideal car to drive, and its extreme economy of fuel, oil and tires, is only another proof of high engine efficiency.

Shortly before the hour at which the final boat, was announced to begin, word was passed round that all movement around the stockade was to cease and perfect silence was to be maintained. So far as the beaters were concerned at all-vents

A REGULAR YUSILADE,

A regular fusilado fallowed and five elephants together ontered and could be seen indistinctly through the foliage forcing their way to the water at the tip end of their stockade. A few minutes later a batch of twentyone elephants approached in single file along the jungle road leading to the entrance and slowly entered. Theso included several magnificent beasts and the spectators in the enclosure had a good view of the animals as they filed past on the way to the drinking pool. The sight was most impressive. Bonfires were at once lighted few feet within the stockade and the dim outlines of the huge beasta was seen through the haze of smoko. Finally a third batch, comprising about thirteen elephants, was driven in and, the stockade then closed upon a most satisfactory cap turé.

During the heavy firing which immed iately preceded the entry of the elephants

most unfortunate incident occurred. The strictest instructions had been issued to all the men bearing shot guns that no ball cartridge were to be used in any circum- stances and that the guns were to be load- ed with powder only. At least one baster disobeyed his orders with the result that two or three times pellets could be heard whistling over the heads of those in the inclosure. Several polleta struck the sup ports of the Governor's stand. The 'ladion stand were in the Landyan ladies' thoroughly alarmed and descended. Orders were passed round that the spectators wo,e to kneel down:””. A keavy pellet passed through the sunshade of Mrs. Maxwell Johnstone and badly wounded a fores ranger Mr. Vejetunge in the arm, which was badly 'akattered. A doctor was sent for and the patient despatched to hospital hin-feared ho may loss, his arm. “An Aratchi was hit in the forehead but" is believed not to be badly hurt. A spent pollet passed through the brim of Mr. E. B. Alexander's topes but although it grazed bis forebead did not injure bim.“

REFORM OFTHE FRENCH CONSERVATOIRE,

Faria, September 1st) M. Rabsud, whose appointment as | head of the Conservatoire is now officially announced promises to carry out certain refórma.

As the prime condition of accepting the pont, he has received permission to arrange that: in future examiners shall always ba chosen by himself. This is considered necessary to prevent certain intrigues which have gone on in the past. In the matter of teaching,, it is gratifying" to know that the professors are to have greate er freedom, and to be allowed to use their own methods of instruction as long as the desired result attained by their
