Hongkong rainfall for the 24 hours ending at 10a.m. to-day, 0.01 inches. Total suce January 1st, 7.51 inches against an. average of 68.12 inches.

The forecast for the 24 hours ending at noon to-day is as follows :-

--------DETRICT.

Hoadmasters of Public Schools who have discussed the Bishop of Oxford's regat criticism of our public school system are, in the main disposed to say that he is wrong. The Bishop, who as Dr. Burgo was Head of Repton in 1900 and Head of Winchester from 1901 to 1911, said the other day, at a meeting of the Church Managers and Teachers Association:-

What shame-it is that an English public school hey should leave selgul, and not kuole something about Australia of the rulinwents of commerce, that he should go into husi Hongkong to Gap Rock ness and know nothing of bookkeeping;

on the Con that he should find himself tient and not be able to speak at least two foreign languages; that he should go out into the world and know nothing of the structure of his own body, if anatomy, and physiology; that he should he ignorant of mathematical astronomy, and so on.

More is being dono, (proceeded Sirloin) than the Bishop is aware of. We encourage the boys to read in their sparastina in all sorts of directions. Boys in the Sixth have to do an essay each, week on a subject of real interest. For instance, What is a just wage?" was asked the other day.. I don't know, and I thought it just as well to let them think it out. Now to write on these subjects boys have to read and to think.

The Headmaster of Marlborough deal- ing with various points raised in the Bishop's criticism, said:- h

He can also' specialise in modern languages, and can on reaching the Fifth specialise in chemistry, biology and-botany Fer a good many. years Karlborough has had an astronomical society, such as is frequently found in the Sixth Form in many schools. The Rev. R. H. Owen, Headmaster of Uppingham, said:

The Bishop laments the ignorance of elementary science which the average

Public School boy shows. But does he realise that there are many Public Schools, where gen eral science forms part of the curriculum form? Headmasters are notori

of every 'busly ignorant of science, but their very ignorance has resulted in good, in that it has made many of them determine that the boys who pass through their hands shall not go out into the world as ignorant of the common facts of life as they were themselves when they left school.
