modity, the raising of railway rates, rents, and so forth. Bome people. attribute these rises to profiteering,"others to the inflation of the currency. No doubt both of these reasons hare an important bearing on the subject, but surely there is some funda mental cause underlying the whole "pheno

menon.

In the following lines I will endeavour to explain, in the simplest language possible, what appears to me to be the cause for all articles being said to have "increased in value."

The forest for the 24 hours ending at noen to day is na follows :--- DISTRICT

For "generations the people of this country have measured the value of all commodities against the pound sterling. and cannot Dow realise that the baine of. the pound Auctuates in the same way na that of any other article in common use, Its exchange value against such article | fand demand. Before the war our National Debt stood at something like £700.000:000. Today it is approximately £8,000,000,000. What has happened to all the pounds. and what real, wealth hare these credits produced The pounds thus raised have bren paid to soldiers for standing in trenches and fighting the Germans, to men and women for sidang abett, bombs, gun, and aeroplanes, all of which have been destroyed. The majority of these pounds, therefore, have produced no real wealth."

is governed by the ordinary law of supply ASAHI

If a man is paid to make a cair, he has made something of value which remains, but if he is given the same amount to make shell, which is destroyed, his energy as far as the production of wealth The result in concerned bas been wasted. of this waited energy is reflected in the valve of the pound to-day.

To draw a simile, let us imagine our selves back in the old days of barter, when pne article was exchanged for another, one sarage would come with a weapon and exchange.it for some corn. Imagine a war to break out, and thousands of milions" of weapers to be created without the energy necessary to make them, as in the ease of the pound sterling eredis. After the war the sivage offers a weapon in ex change for the same amount of corn as. before. He is informed that-fery little garn has been grown during the war period, but thousands of millions of weapons have beeg made. As a result of thự she has ta give quite a number of wiupons for the same amount of corn for which he gave only one weapon in prewar days. The pound of to-day is in the position of the weapon in my simile. There are too many pounds and not enough articles to exchange for them. The rule" of the pound has consequently fallen, and will continue to remain low until we are again in, position by hard work and increased pro- duction to make the articles necimary for the world's tråde.

The continuous increase in wages and the following of what is termed the vicious circle will not help production, and will assuredly postpone the day when the pound will begin to come into its own again.

ד.

If the working man would only realise it, his best plan is to try, to inercise the value of the pound by hard work and in- creased production; instead of reducing, it still farther by demanding or poundi and doing less work for them. His present, wages, in prewar purchasing vale, 'would' make his position for mure comfortable then at present. If people would only appreciate that present-day values are not real increases," but merely the result of a fall in the value of the pound, conse quent upon the creation of Government- credits, and would understand that "the country, instead of being richer because of the large number of pounds in circulation, is really very much the poorer for this disastrous war, then be thrift, hard work, and increased production the purchasing value of the pound would gradually be in- creased.

RED COAT OR KHAKI ?

The proposal to put the Army back into scarlet is not merely a question of £ s. d. That it would cost nearer £5,000,000-thán £3,000,000, with tailors present charges, is obvious. But that is not the only con sideration: there is (the Spectator paints out) the question of sentiment. Has 40yone been at pains to enquire the feel- ings of the private soldiers on the point? in the present state of public opinion, which is one of civism run mal, it is our belief that the men in many regimente would refuge to wear the red coat, which they would regard as a badge of servitude The khaki uniform is
