PEKING NOTES.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT]

PRKING, June 26th.

A DISTINGUISHED VISITOR..

M. Painleve, the former French Premier.) heading a mission of French scientists, reached höre on Tuesday and yester day was received in audience by Pre sident Hsu Shib-chang, to when be pre- sented the diploma of honorary doctor, which degree bad" been conferred upon the Chief Executive by the University of Parts. M. Painleve is the guest of Pre sident ou at the Grand Hotel de Pekin, and it was here that be suffered a slight accident on Wedinaday, when' his 'arm "was injured in the lavator. The object of the mission is scientific and cultural. It hopes to study conditions in Ching and make French culture better known in this coun try. After eight days' stay at the Grand Hotel de Pekin, M. Paimeve will be the guest of the French Minister, M. Boppe, at the Legution, and will afterwards visit Hankoy, Shanghai, Canton and Haiphong. THE MURDERED AMERICAN MISSIONARY.

Neither British nor American mission organisations make vinims upon the Chin- es Government to compensation in the event of their workers luming their lives! through revolutionary buthiresks or as the bands of bandits, a fact which makes exceedingly interesting the offer of Chang Ching-Fae, the discredited Tuchun of Hunan, to pay $45,000 compensation to the American Reformed Mission for the mur der of the Rev. A. W. Reimert at Yochow by Chang Ching.yao's troops. General Chang reports that the murderer was dis- covered and summarily executed." It is understood that the offer has not yet been transmitted to the "American Legation:

OF BRITISH INTEREST.

Mr. R. H. Clive, of the Far Eastern Departacus of the British Foreign Office, arrived here on Monday in order to take aver charge of the British Legation dur ing the absence of Sir Berrby Alston who leaves next week for a short furlough in England. On Wednesday President Hsu entertained the British Minister, Mr. Clive, Sir Bonierville Head, and Mr. S. Barton to luncheon at the Presidency. CHINA'S DISGRACE BECOMES CHINA'S SORROW.

It used to be said that the Ketteler Monument which stood in the Hatamen was China's disgrace because it was erected by the Chinese Imperial Government in 1901 at the behest of the German Imperial Government ja, a permanent apology for the murder of the German Minister, Baron von Ketteler, biit mor in its rerected form in the Centräg Park it has become China's surrow. The object of its transfer. was not merely the removal of a stigma on the national geputation bas the com memuration of the Victory of Right over Might Unfortunately, however, Chian feels that by reason of the Shantung award of the Peace Conference she is not in a position to erlelirate the end of the world war and the coming of peace, As all the world knows, China is bitterly, disappoint od over the failure of the Peace Conference to render the justice which she expected, and thus it is that China cannot rejoice over the completion of the re-rection of -the-beatiful unrble pailu-nor-hannur-

LI SEM LING.

One of the conditions of Li Sum Ling's release was that he should give an "under 'taking fot to, send any more telegrams from Peking to sexspapers outside. This he has done. His experienos proved the value and the number of his friends, as it was through the jastrumentality of the Minister of Finance and of Mr. Chow Tzechi, the prospective Minimeape of Finance, that he was liberated. The authorities are apparently (deter- Bined to treat the southern secupation of Hunan as a local affair which should not be perousteed to interfere with the prace. negotiations. Such attitude is appreciated- when it is known that there is good reason for believing that the Southern-advances mado possible through colusion with certain of the Northern generals, ChangTM Ching-yno-was--generally-datohted in Hunan, where the people wanted a Hunan- in charge, nad when it is remembered that the operations were carried out by Humatiese themesive thinexplanation sounds extremely fr-ible-Chang-is-not adding to his ropatation by asking for the panishment of bishtother; his son, and, a host of
