A GREAT TRIUMPH. THE PANAMA PASSAGE OF H.M.Ë "RENOWN
H.M.8. Renown, April 8th. The passing of the Panama Canal on March 30th by H.M.8. Renown is an event in history, and marks a double triumph shared by the two great English-speaking nations of the world. The construction of this gress canal is well known as a marre of engineering skill; with the passing of the largest ship that ever took the shirt. ant between the Atlantic and the Pacifa What Cocans a new emphasis is added ta

Satur water for this leviath battle-cruiser, and all promised well, when a precautionary weep revealed the presence of a fifty-ton Sun rock right in the narrow fairway appar eatly missed by the soundings already Mon taken. This reduced our margin of water | depth at a critical point and made the cut absolutely impassable to the Renon, which drew several more feet than the depth pro vided by the most energetic dredging at the spot where the rock emerged from general detritus of the landslide. Finally diversƒ). MARTIN'S went down and blasted it to pieces for a sufficient depth, and dredgers then scooped and smoothed over the fairway, not how- ever to its normal depth, but only sufficient to give the Renown a margin ur something like two feet of water.
A. ENOTTY PROBLEM.
This little affair was, of course, the out- standing incident of the passing of the Canal, and will probably remain so for the general public. I find, however, from Ehose most competent to pase sa opinion that the triumph of this, pasraga lies cle- where.

I understand that the model would in no wise take the curves on the drawing, blue prints of which were seat oneboard, but it is the triumph of the Renoir and those who designed and ran her that she accomplished the impossible.
