COCAINE CULTIVATION IN FORMOSA.
UVER, 500 ACRES PLANTED.
The Tuiram Shimbun (Formosa) recently. published an article on the cultivation of cocaine in Formosa A Peking, dispatch gives the following translation of the article, from which it. will be sech that Japan seems determined to keep up her reputation for the supply of deleterious drugs. The reference to the fine field for the sale of the drug in China is signi ficant:-
At frat when the importation of cocaine was cut off during the war it was very generally remarked that Formosa was suited for the preparation of the trees from which cocaine is derived, and that enor Dous profits could be got from planting the trees and manufacturing the cocaine.
Later, there were a great mùny in differ- ent parts of the island, who planted: trees by way of experiment, but as in the majority of cases it was nothing more than an experiment, only a nominally súccessful result was obtained." It was not defnitely shown whether it conid be carried on as`k business with the certainty of profita.
The Tainan branch of the Abe Shoten, however, having applied for and obtained. a permit for the purchase of about 720. acres in Chikushi-Món, Kagi Prefecture, planted over 150 acres about two or three years ago. During the past year 380 addi. tional acres have been planted and the manufacture of cooning has commenced:
The result has been better, than antici, pated. A yield of about 42 pounds of coesine is obtained. from the leaves of the trees on one acre of land Formerly Ger manny had a monopoly of the manufacture, and supplies were entirely stopped. The price rose accordingly, to more than $150 a pound. And there still will be no decline from this price until the productive capa city of Germany is restored.
"Since the nae of opium was forbidden. in China, an inclination has developed to substitute coenino for it, so that the pros pecta for cocaine will henceforward be all the brighter. As an industry for Formosa it is evidently one that, will be extremely, profitable. At any rate, it is considered a' matter for congrátúlstjan that Formosa has this year for the first time obtained a yield of 49 pounds of cocaine to the acre.
