MYSTERIOUS SYRIA,

Percival Phillips, the Apres Special Correspondent, writes from Beirut under date March Ist

From the deck of the Bargn Call (the most dilatory steamer that aver loafed along the Syrian coast northward "from Port Said) Beirut was the fairest picture of a town I had seen this side of the desart. Which should have been sufficient warning to expect "the worst. The real Beirut reminds me of nothing so much as Kingston after the earthquake.

We elbowed our way into the crowded harbour, and gazed hopefully on her deceptive beauty. Tier pon tier of white houses rose steeply from the water's edge; there were alluring splashes of groen among the rooftops, ornate public build- ings, church domes, and minarets; a back- ground of steep mountain slopes reach- ing skywards to the snowy crest of Lebanon, lost in drifting clouds. A desirable city indeed, obviously outrank ing in size and splendour her competitors for the rich trade of Syria.

The harbour shouted as much. Thirty steamers of half a dozen nationalities struggled for room inside the little breake water, demanding more or less profanely and in an any languages an immediate supply of lighters and longshoremen. The mother of all, ironclads aired her washing jat a buoy.

A trim Messagerier mailbone edged daintily through the horde of anchored Greek, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese freighters-some of them renamed German prizes beginning a new and better life and exhibited the lates, general on her bridge deck. A trooper was discharging her cargo of Algerian infantry at the quay Soldiers overran the foreground of this lively scene, add the tricolour of France few tant in the morning breeze

You imagine you are back in the war everywhere zone. French troops are The familiar scenes of the Western front keep crossing your mind; and yet it is nut the same. Not the same type of soldier, nor yet of officer. These are, for the most part, hardbitten, scarred, and scorched legions of Northern Africa Algerians in red fezzes and khaki wander among the bazaars; occasionally a shiny black Senegalese flashes his gleaming teeth at you from a ration cart

Elderly majors, burned brown by the African sun, lean, wrinkled, and liverish, stare grimly at you thriugh pince-nez, tailored young subalterns, thinking of Paris and bating Beirut, ransack the meagrely stocked bookshops; black-beard- ed captains from the Midi and slim Haff officers from headquarters in the hill Spahin, and gunner, sift through the varied throng which is Beirut out of doors.

From time to time a trooper is relapen with khaki and vanishes northwards column marches to the railway-slation,

NERVOUS TENSION.

The city itself is as calm as London. Yet beneath the busy routine of everyday life you detect an air of anxiety, a feel- ing of tension, of uncertainty inged with apprehension. Syrians talk guard- edly, and are non-committal in their intercourse with rangers. You feel that the French, while otwardly impas- sive, are curiously alert and suspicious, nawontedly tacitura, perhaps a little too grimly watchful of their neighbour "At night the quays are picketed. The only patient people are the poor, gratitude the doles of rice given them by the bindly French, but they seem to have little interest and less hope in the future. They have suffered much As I came back to my dilatory steamer I saw little ragged children hovering in the road- way A Inden lorry dashed, by at break- neck speed.
