EFFECTS OF NOISE ON THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.

The Times" medical correspondent writes:

Science is only jus awakening to the vast importance of the hervous system în every met and even in every thought. Just recantly a great deal of work on this subject has been carried out and some of the results are so interesting as to deserve gorious consideration for they possess a practical application.

The object of one branch of the work has been to determine whether or no, in the absence of the ordinary visible signs of emotion, electrical signs of what are called "omotive discharges" can be de tected by the galvanometer. Professor Wallor, of South Kensington, has devoted himself to the subject and has been carry ing out prolonged researches.

It has been found that “large and sud- dan" electrical responses which are in dependant of any muscular movement accompany a great many of the shocks and alarms of life. In the first series of experiments strong and disagreeablo. stimuli were used-e.y., un unexpected loud sound, an unexpected burn (lighted match under hand), a disagreeable pan- gent, smell, a painful thought. It wils found that while muscular movement of any sort might be absent, marked electri- cal reactions occurred. In Belgian woman who was told to think of her native land-sko nad scen various episodes of the German occupation-a very strong rese tion was evidenced. It was found too, that the most effective ideas were such as were accompanied by disagreeable painful emotion and that the threat of a barn was often more effective in altering electrical relations than the burn itself. Lighting & match might give a larger effect than the application of a match to the free band. The apprehension of a bad smell which had just been experienced proved to be particularly effective. The expected prick of needle produced in gome cases mord effect than an unexpected prick. The conclusion was drawn that different subjects react differently to dif ferent stimuli, and the same' subject in different states of health and at different times of day rosess differently to identical stimulation..

or

This is the basis of the new work which now in progress. It will be seen that it amounts to a measurement of emotion in terms of electrical phenomena. It may later be possible to say how far the "wear and tear." of life is conditioned by noise and other stimuli-a matter of very considerable importance to a genera tion which has been forced to expend its energy in prodigal "fashion,"

MYSTIC ENGLISHMAN.

WORK IN MID-ASIA,

A correspondent writes to the Times of India that merchants and others arriving in India from Persia are full of stories of an aged Englishman who has suddenly appeared on the horizon, in mid-Asia and who is credited with being the author of the various anti-Bolshevik treaties that aro, being made nunongst the Caucasian States,

COMBON

By means which the Persians consider very wonderful this officer has induced the 94-5 Georgians, Tartars, Armenians and Per Bieas to put aside their differences in order to combine against a enemy. He has even, it is asserted, been responsible for starting amongst

the Kurds some kind of movement which will enable them to set, if necessary, in con cert with the Armenians.

This last is considered the most extra- ordinary feat of all, for the antagonism between the Kurds and the Armenians has existed almost since the dawn of history. The Persians ny of the English officer that God has given him the greatest gift of tongues so that no matter. in what language he is addressed he can reply in it and that is one of the chief reasons why he is able to sway the medley of ton- gues and races that inhabit the Caucasus and the regions below;

The Persians, call this Englishman, hitherto unknown to the British public at large, Colonel Wardrop, and exsert that be arrived at Tifis about two years ago with instructions and anthority from the War Office. He is an old man, they add, and when he first arrived the Georgians thought it a very good joke for they have no reverence for age and consider a man who has passed the prime of life and is therefore unfit for active warfare as TRAD Tess. However, the "Colonel" in many ways soon proved that he was a match for any Georgien, however, blustering, and when be denounced a riotout assembly in its own patais he began to be both 'feared and admired:23

But who is this Wardrop . There is no likely Colonel Wardrop in the Army list. People who assert that they know all about him when pressed on the subject of his -military rank, admit that they are not certain that he is a soldier by profession. In any case he is known as the Habima Biasi, which means Political Officer, and in the Persian view all political officers are Colonels. There was, bowever, some years ago in the British Consular Service B certain Wardrop who had spent his time in places like Petrograd; Moscow and Rumania and who about twenty years ago wrote a book on the Georgian highland. He retired in 1910 and because of a PÉ- markable ayititude he had for languages was appointed an educational adviser to the City of London College, AK

When war broke out, he was employed, because of his knowledge of Rasian, in the Foreign Office and it was known that Che was sent to Moscow in 1917 Hoi

This a strange fact that an unknown man, who eleven years ago considered his life work done, should now be displaying a genins and a resource which are likely to place him in the front rank of Empire. hilder
