The New York Heruht, founded by James Gordon Bennett' the elter, and continued for nearly half a century by his son, has been sold. Ita founder was penniless young Scotsman who had drifted to America in the early part of last century. and, by vigorous and bril, liant personal touches, created a property which, for many decades, made enormous

fortunes.

The new owner. Mr. Frank Munsey, started in similar romantic circumstances He was a penniless Yankee boy from New England, dissatisfied with his modest posi. tion as a telegraph operator. His head buzzed with idens. Like all New England boys, "his ideas ran to what are called "Yankee notions." He bought and sole little things, and invested all his deals with an air of romance and mystery. He sold. groceries, and then inevitably be started a small magazine.
