This in itself is a distinct gain. AWOKE TO FAME.
At a dinner given in his honour at the House of Commons on the evening of his return Mr. Asquith, replying to the toast of his health, remarked upon the changed attitude of the Press towards him, and said he was not conscious of any change in himself. But like Byron," be con- tinued, "who woke one morning to find bimself famous, be woke one morning to And himself popular."
The little personal touch is illuminating. Although Mr. Asquith is far and away the most polished speaker of the present day, he is not popular with the multitude. His style is perfect in form; every sentence is balanced, and the right word always comes with ease and smoothness Bus as a speaker be is cold and he leaves his audiences cold, too. In this respect he is & most remarkable contrast to Mr. Lloyd George, who is able to make even his bitterest enemies glow with pleasure as they listen to the fire of bis eloquence, while his friends and supporters are always carried away in a veritable rapture of enthusiasm. Perhaps the comparative failure of Mr. Asquith on the platform is due to the fact that he is an exceedingly sby man. He is also a proud man. is afraid to let himself go
REQUISITIONED GOOD.: RIGHT OF THE SUBJECT DENIED
BY REGULATION,
A judgment of considerable importance concerning goods requisitioned by the Ad- miralty for Naval stores was given in the King's Beach Division recently by Mr. Justice Balter, who declared that such fair market goods must be paid for at value as against the contention that the Admiralty wore only liable in respect of a third of that value.
Mr. Justice Balter said that in October. 1917, the Newcastle Breweries (Limited) were the owners of about 50 puncheons of rum, mostly in bonded warehouses. The Admiralty declared their intention to take possession of the whole of that rum, and in the following month they acquired 239 puncheons. The suppliants claimed the market value and urged that the amount of such "valne should be deter mined, unlcas agreed on, by a Court of Low as age Love
The Admiralty rejected both claims. They had paid to the suppliants without prejudice £10,774, which, according to the suppliante, was not much more than third of the market value. The Admiralty said no further sum was payable unless further payment should be apprised or determined by the War Loss Royal Com mission.
